Recommended Tractor for 4.5 acres

Hi Diggin it,

I currently own a 5045E and are looking to purchase a smaller size tractor (25HP) for cutting the grass mostly lol (joking but not really) I’ve been looking around at a lot of different brands including JD, Mahindra Kubota and Kioti and I’m just not seeing much difference in price. I’m leaning towards and 2025R Bc the increased weight and ground clearance over the 1025 which should only run you about 2500 more for the 2025R

However the JD 2025R does not allow you to operate the mid mountain mower independently unless you buy a conversion kit. If you go to the next size up the 2032 I believe you’ve got the command cut standard but you’re looking at it a price jump of 6K.
My 125 has a simple slide lever to select PTO ... Rear, Mid or Both. I can (and often do) have the FEL, Backhoe and MMM on at the same time and can use any or all of them. Including the BH, it was several thousand less than the 1025R without BH.

And no, mileage doesn't mean the same everywhere. When the grocery stores and lumber yards are 20 to 30 miles away, 50, 75 or 100 to a tractor dealer doesn't mean much.

Take a real good look at the MT225S, maybe check them out on TractorHouse and get a feel for them.

Hello there! Looks like your about an hour away from me right now in Maine, my wife grew up here! Love Maine!

LS seems like a quality tractor! Let me start by saying that I have a JD 5045 with a loader for large jobs but I need something a little smaller that I can trailer to dads with the backhoe and I like having a belly mower option for some steep inclines and tight spaces I can’t get my big brush hog into.

Let’s say that I’m between a JD2025r and Kioti Cs2520 but the LS line intrigues me.

Talk me out of the LSXJ 2025 vs the MT225s. The 225 seems more like a JD 3 series tractor With a curb weight of 2400 pounds and a 54 inch width. Even though I’m getting a Backhoe I’m trying to stay on the compact end for maneuverability in the barn easy to trailer etc. Which makes me lean towards the XJ although the 225s footprint may not be that much larger (hard to tell from photos)

In some areas of the country that is not too far.

My dealer will pickup and deliver at no charge for any reason within about 125 miles IIRC. It was one reason, of many, why I went with LS but not all LS dealers will do that. The Kutoba dealer was closer (45 miles) and he quoted $300 per round trip. The JD dealer was 25 miles away and quoted $150.

Plus, I saved over $8000. You could be correct for your case but not for someone like me. Not needing to purchase a trailer, and saving $8000 was more important than getting my tractor a day or so sooner if it needed work. But I am a hobby user so a day or two is not critical.

BTW, the one time I had to have it serviced for an oil leak, I called before noon and had it returned midafternoon the next day. Another time I needed a fitting for the third function valve and he took the fitting out of a stock valve and gave it to me at no charge. He is about 55 miles away. I would buy from a dealer like that if he was 125 miles away.

Not all dealers are created equal. For any of you living in northern MI, check out Sumerix. Ask for Ivan, and tell him I sent you....

yea it is a mixed bag and it is not a given that you will get good service from any brands dealer. even though i end up going a different route my closest LS dealer would have been my second choice (above my 2nd choice Mahindra dealer). I had to wait for about a month for my local Mahindra dealer to get exactly what i wanted but i was never really tempted to go with my second choice Mahindra dealer who had some in stock.
my 1st choice dealer is about 30 miles away but they delivered my tractor for free and picked it up for warranty work for free also. The owner is the chief sales person and from the get go he has been straight with me (does not always agree with me but is open about what he disagrees on and can back it up)

Assuming you mean the 1025r? My issue is (correct me if I’m wrong). If you are using the rear PTO implements and lowering them (blade, tiller exc) the mid pto also lowers at the same time.

It may not be a popular opinion but I would not want to mow with a tractor (brush hog yes, weekly mow all summer no) I would rather have a bigger frame tractor and a lawn mower. My tractor is bigger then yours but with a loader on and especially with a rear blade it is big driving near buildings etc. I would get a zero turn to mow with and the biggest tractor I can afford for tractor duties. I have a TC45 (45hp new holland) and a lot less property then you, normally it is great occasionally it is to small for the tasks I try to do with the loader, moving trees, cement etc.

same here I like having a large CUT with a rotary cutter for the fields and my ZTM for finish mowing around the house, about 1.5 acres. I have used the ZTM on some of the rugher fields but it is hard on it and the tractor is hard on my close cut lawn. The ZTM is sooo much faster at mowing my lawn.

I'm not going to bad mouth the XJ2025, but it's a much older machine with ergonomics that match; that said they seemed pretty similar in dimensions when next to one another.

The MT225S is roughly the size of a larger frame Deere 2 series, though it may more approach a 3 in weight, I don't recall the weight of the 3033R I was looking at. The MT2, essentially, uses the same Yanmar engine as the Deere 2025R but attaches it to a 3-range transaxle. It's got a nice, open operator platform as well, with a big adjustable seat.

The MT225S is a shot across the bow to the competition, I was extremely impressed with it.

I was also quite impressed with the Kioti CS 20 line, but they were too small for my use; they improved on the CS 10 in seemingly all ways.

There is no way in H I would go with an LS tractor in lieu of other good brands when the LS dealer is 90 miles away.
ok, to each his own. My closest anything dealer is 30 miles, but if i did not like the 5145 so much i was going to go to the nearest LS dealer who was 140 miles away because the MT342 he was offering me was a very good deal for a tractor that has a lot of nice features and nice capability's. Kubota was not in the running for me because the price quoted to me was almost 3X what the LS was priced at and the dealer gave me the distinct impression that he really did not care to talk to me. my father loves his Kubota.

I am absolutely spoiled with regards the the selection of dealers I have with a relaxed drive.

The XJ is 8 inches shorter and 5 inches narrower and roughly 800lbs lighter than the MT225e.

I agree i liked the MT2 series it was just to small for my needs (that is not exactly true i could have done just about everything i wanted to do with the MT2 series it just would have been more time consuming and i would have had to be more patient). at the end of the day with 0% financing all of the options were doable and the price diff for a tractor that had 3X the capability's was only about 60%. I started out looking for the minimum that would work and ended up just getting what was comfortable for me to operate and that i knew would exceed my needs.

He was comparing it to the MT225S, which despite the name has nothing in common with the MT225E, because confusion is fun.

The E is the same size frame as the S, but it is about 700 pounds lighter. I know the E is the economy model. I never looked into anything that small, but I can use the web ok. :)

They can't sit on the same frame, it's impossible.

Ok, it might not be impossible, but it seems the case when you're looking at them side by side. The MT225E is much more physically imposing.

I'd always viewed them as being akin the the Kioti CX2510 and CK2610 in difference.

It sounds like once you get the 1 acre brush area cleaned out you won’t really need a brush mower. Might be better to rent or pay someone to clean out that area then maintain with the belly mower. Any sub compact tractor with a loader will need a counter weight on the rear such as implement or weight box even with loaded tires. I agree with the others that more weight is your friend. Also take into consideration the regeneration system of over 25 horse engines. Some are good others not so much.

No. There is a lock/store position the holds the MMM up if you drop the rear 3 point. Not sure what all brands or models have the, but mine does.

I'm sure you will be amazed when you check
out the LS tractors as they are well made nice
warranty and some options on other name
tractors are standard on the LS tractors
Give them all a test drive so you will know
first hand what will suite your needs!

Honey Badger 2828,

Welcome to TBN.

Without asking what your big picture is, now or into the future, I would make the following three suggestions.
First: The BX230 machine has a front loader the B2301 does not so you are ahead of the game by having a front loader and what it enables you to do, otherwise they are essentially the same machine.
Second: The biggest mistake first time tractor owners make is buying too little machine. As you get used to using the tractor, you will want to do more and that requires weight and horse power.
Three: A tractor is only as good as the implements/ attachments that you can add to it to get work done. By having a loader, you have already checked off a major attachment.
I agree totally, I would’ve tried to buy kubota 50 hp, 4w/d with loader , backhoe, cab , and grapple bucket, I to have 5 acres, it has been in family since 1929. I found a Branson 30 hp no 4w/d. With a loader, blade, and shredder, from private seller .so if possible go bigger you won’t be sorry.

I think that's a very valid solution for many circumstances, one exception being where mowing steep hills is required - especially if the ground will sometimes be damp. My little 4wd tractor is great for the steep hills I mow at our lake cabin...as long as I travel vertically up & down it, of course. I would be really wary of a ZT there.

That said, guessing the OP might not be facing hill issues in Kansas.
