I "lost" my billfold this summer. (Is it lost if you don't know it missing?) I was riding my bicycle on the Wabash trace. I got a call from my wife while riding which was very unusual. I suspected the worst, since her father is 98. She informed my that a nice young girl had returned my wallet, that she had found on the trace. I had changed how I loaded the "trunk" bag and forgot to zip it closed. I won't make that mistake again.

If it was me, I'd buy her some roses and when she asks why, tell her "Because I'm an idiot, found my wallet in my other pocket, and was too embarrassed to tell you the truth."

She'd laugh and then tell me she likes carnations better, but I forgot that, too.

That’s actually a good idea but I’d also make a joke and tell her if she forgets tomorrow why I bought her flowers, I’d remind her.

From the age of 11 or 12 to the age of 15 or 16 I helped an old family friend who was building a house out in rural Louisiana. He had lost his smokes and we tore the place apart looking for them and he was pretty upset because it was Sunday and the only convenience store we had was not open. It was only late afternoon but he was done, he poured a double whiskey and sat down. He covered his bald head with one of those Gilligan type fishing hats and when he pulled it off, there was his cigarettes and lighter, sitting on top of his head.

He was in his late 40s I’m sure and was not happy about this and my uncontrollable laughter was not making it better. He’s a really good guy but he threatened me, said he would fire me and I’d never be able to go up to that property again if I told anybody.

When I got home I said “hey Ma, you’re not gonna believe what Mr. Roy did”

He didn’t fire me and in fact gave me my first job in the Alarm business when I finished high school.

I finally realized, about 15-20 years ago --- my memory wasn't what it use to be. SO ....... everything has its place and when done with "it" - better be putting it back in its place. My memory seldom helps find the "lost". Its simply a matter of an extended search.

We were leaving to go to a grand's soccer game yesterday afternoon and I could not find my billfold. I knew I had put it in the same place as always in the bedroom but it was not there. I always take it out of my right back pocket and put it in a tray on the nightstand. Not there. We searched everywhere in the house for thirty minutes with her questioning me constantly. Looked in the bedroom, under the bed, behind night stand, in attached bath. No billfold. Under covers of the bed, nope. In both the other bathrooms, nope. In the utility room, sunroom, and in the refridgerator, no billfold. I even looked in the dishwasher because I had started it after putting in the lunch plate, no billfold. Was about to tell her to drive and we would look for it later when I stuck my hand in my left front pocket and......drum roll......my billfold was there with my cellphone and glasses case.

She has lost several things lately and I have made a big thing out of her getting old and forgetful so I told her it was behind a bathroom door.

Should I own up to my deception?
