Never had that dried beef, maybe I will try it someday, maybe....

How about vienna sausages, fully cooked ready to eat and amazingly flavourless.

Turtle, for that matter not many folks ate it back then. But we set turtle lines every year and always harvested at least 3 or 4 turtles a year from the creek I grew up on. My dad would sometimes catch 5 or 6 and fry them up just for our family reunion. That would get wiped out very quickly.

If you took Turtle to a reunion now it would all be coming home with you lol.

Except for the fact that killing a turtle is some of the worst Karma known...fried soft-shell turtle is some of the best meat I have ever eaten...

Being from the South, I've never been able to convince people that slow cooked, buttered, and spiced cabbage with root bulbs is a thing to eat. Its an entirely not used, vegetable in the PNW. Which I find odd, as there is plenty of Cabbage , and plenty of Beets. But no one wants to eat Borsch, no matter how well prepared it is. :)

There's a reason most of the foods listed in this thread are not still eaten today, and it's not scarcity.

I'll be in the corner with my corn beef special.

Only ever ate soft-shelled...These days harvesting them is highly restricted...most legally (and not) caught gets exported...

Never had soft shell. I am inland, are these coastal?

Nah, soft shells are in creeks, we call them leatherbacks but they are technically called softshelled. They are a little more elusive than a snapper, much less aggressive too. But my dad always said they were better to eat than snapper. They were not as plentiful but when you caught them you were happy.
