The next guy that claims "green (or orange) paint doubles the price"

For years I always wanted one of those New Holland Boomer 8n they made for a few years around 2010. Just love the retro/throwback look of the tractor. Problem is they didn't make very many of them and were plagued with problems with their CVT transmissions from the start.

They are old enough now where they are longer required to carry parts for them so that makes matters even worse. I still have a fond eye for them but the fact that keeping running if there was a breakdown such a challenge keeps me from ever owning one.

Actually CNH has a fantastic parts system. Including old Fords like mine.

I mean, y'all Kubota and Deere owners have got to admit it's kinda humorous how huge the price surcharge is on your machines. Obviously it's not "the paint" - it's the reputation for quality and reliability, established and superior dealership network, but also - hunger for profit margin from the corporate overlords. It's many things.

Massey tractors are nearly as expensive, so thats kinda a weird way to start the thread.

In my category of tractor needs, I would have to spend 50% more, literally 10+ thousand more dollars to get a Kubota or Deere with the same loader capacity and machine weight. My Kioti CK3510 is also an extremely popular and well selling tractor, with excellent parts availability for the foreseeable future. But if I was a millionaire, I might gladly pay the surcharge and buy a Kubota or Deere, just for a tiny bit more peace of mind and fancier dealership experience.

No one should feel bad for choosing a green machine, but you're deluding yourself if you think everyone else automatically has an inferior machine just because we spent less to buy it.

Often it’s not the machine quality between brands that is the factor for consideration. Many brands have limited dealer support on local area, making them a more risky purchase. I see many tractor brands being sold on lots outside of feed stores, hardware stores, etc…. Last week in Texas, I even saw a fenced in lot in a farm field with new Bransons for sale. Nice tractors but where does someone go for dealer service?

Good post, @deezler. And I'm not sure if this comment was aimed at me or anyone else, but I did not in any way mean to imply every other machine is inferior to Deere and Kubota. Every manufacturer has a range of gems and bad designs, and even within these gems and bad designs, many pros and cons within each individual model and revision (year), as well as pros and cons in dealer networks, parts availability, etc.

That said, I do believe Deere and Kubota share more of the pros and less of the cons across the available product line, dealerships, parts availabilities for old machines, etc., than any of the less costly brands, which is what has allowed them to justify these higher prices. But whether that is justified in each case is not for me or anyone else to judge, there are many good reasons to buy a less costly machine, all things considered.

Yeah. Anyone considering buying a new tractor should demand to see the service area of your selling dealer.

I’ll start: dealer service and parts availability. And proven reliability. The other colors near me have tractors in a fenced lot with no significant service or parts warehouse.

I am curious to see what machines the people who say that there is a "green tax" are comparing a Deere to. The other major equipment manufacturers (CNH and Kubota) have similar to often somewhat higher prices for comparable machines. I'll even throw AGCO in here although they are a poor shadow of what they once were. The "second tier" manufacturers like LS, Mahindra, and Dadong/Kioti are not all that much less expensive than Deere/CNH/Kubota for comparable units. (I know that LS makes CNH's compacts, I am talking about their full-sized machines.) The only ones that really are a lot cheaper are the tractors made in Russia and the ex-Communist Bloc countries, and the no-name tractors from China and elsewhere in Asia.

Deere clearly has the best parts availability. CNH has generally decent availability but not quite as good as Deere's, and their prices aren't any lower. I've never owned a Kubota or Land Pride so I can't comment on their parts. I had the same issue the original poster brought up with AGCO discontinuing parts on still relatively new tractors, I needed a MFWD axle part but it had been discontinued only a few years after they stopped making the tractor.
