TEA 20 hand start

Hi all, does anyone know if it would be possible to hand start a tea20? It has no starter motor and I figure the excersize would help if I tried crank starting, but Im worried/ don't know if it's safe or even possible

Yes it is possible to hand start these tractors by hand. Many years ago I see two farmers having a small bet on starting the diesel version. The diesel had a flat handle as I remember, just to the right of the stearing wheel and under the instrument panel, that when pussed down was a valve lifter/decompression lever. and yes one of the farmers did start it by hand. Again if I remember, with the diesel, you had to hold in a button on the left of the gearbox and at the same time use the gear lever to crank the starter motor

My Uncle would occasionally hand start a Massey Ferguson 35. But he did permanently bend a finger out of shape one time.

Check the front of your crankshaft pulley to ensure it has the engagement ratchet to allow you to insert the hand crank end into it. Do some homework (Youtube videos). More than a few folks have broken thumbs or wrists by hand cranking because of kickback. You want your thumb on your cranking hand to be parallel to the crank, not wrapped around it. You start by pulling UP from 6 o'clock, not pushing down from 12 o'clock.

I'm sure it's possible, I used to start the old Farmall that way. I was young and didn't even know tractors HAD electric starters until after I was married. As stated above, you CAN break a wrist that way. Be sure your timing is correct. Of course you could also push start the tractor.
