The RR cut thru Woodsfield, now filled in. My Dad still recalls the smoke from trains as they went thru here, when he was a boy.

The barn and silo in the background are still there. There’s no trace of the RR left in this immediate area.

In the early 1870s Woodsfield businessmen led by banker Samuel L. Mooney promoted a narrow-gauge railroad to connect to the B&O at Bellaire.

Amazing how much woods clearing was done back then for agriculture and railroads.
One very famous man from out town, artist Andrew Wyeth used to tell me when I was a kid how many fewer trees were in our town when he was a kid in the 20’s-30’s-40’s compared to now.
I happened across an estate that was for sale in my town. A beautiful old farm and stone house. The wife had passed and they were auctioning contents.
Upon the walls were mural sized photos taken from bi-planes 80+ years ago. There were literally no trees. Everything was striped farm fields, a few roads and a few railroads.

RR began in 1875 as Bellaire and Southwestern RR
In 1882 in consolidated and became the BZ&C Bellaire Zanesville & Cincinnati RR, but the locals called it the Bent, Zigzag & Crooked.
In 1902 the name was changed to OR&W Ohio River and Western, but locals then called it the Old Rusty & Wobbly.
1890-1900 was big oil boom in the area.
1929 the Woodsfield to Zanesville portion was closed
May 30 1931 was the last train to Bellaire. My mom rode thru the tunnel to Coats station below our farm, only it wasn’t yet our farm and she was a girl.
Bellaire is the site of “The Stanton Curve” in the movie Unstoppable. This is the beginning of the stone arches.
