We replaced the defrost heat element on our 30yr old hotpoint after finding it wasn't defrosting. They aren't real complicated once it's figured out. Thermostat, timer, heat coil, switches.
Thanks, BnRidge, will check it out. Apparently it is a fairly cheap part.

I would be willing to pay if I get something that’s not crap. Will check out the reviews. Thanks! I had not thought of Electrolux. Any idea where they’re made?
They’re a Swedish owned company, but I don’t know where they’re manufactured. I know that you can only find them at independent appliance stores. The big boxes don’t carry them. We have had it for over 6 years and no problems so far. But then we also have a garage drinks and garden fridge for about 8 years now and it’s a cheaper Frigidaire. So far so good, but that model is is simple refrigerator with no ice maker, water dispenser or other accessories. It seems like the accessories are what cause issues on refrigerators and the basic cooling functions keep going.

Back in the day Maytag had a commercial that showed the Maytag repairman bored with nothing to do because the Maytag name was so reliable and held up so well. Don't see that guy on TV these days do you? Because he's working his butt off on the junk they sell today.

There still is a Maytag repairman, though his role has changed over the years.

kk been checking out the fridge reviews again.. Learned to my dismay that Kitchenaid is now Whirlpool! My 42" Kitchenaid is probably from before whatever merger took place, when that name meant something. Bummer. I am going to hang on to my old one for now.

I thought they were always Whirlpool, just a higher end product line. At least that has been true for years.

Stay away from Samsung, the fridge that we bought was nothing but problems. Door seals and ice makers were constant issues.

My toaster cost about $12 If it kept us in eggo waffles for a few months, I figured we got our money's worth out of it I think it's lasted us 7 or 8 years so far. Of course, it only gets used, maybe once a month.

We actually have 3 microwaves. The one I have at work is going on 14 years. Started out at home, now it resides on top of my mini fridge at work. It has heated my lunch faithfully for 5 years. The smaller one we purchased to replace it at home is currently in storage in the attic. The house we rent has a built in Microwave over the stove.

The fridge is still kicking going on 13 years.

Samsung NVMEs and SSDs are generally well regarded computer drives as are their phones. They used to make a camera that was also well regarded for its time.

But....the days of being able to assume that a specific brand of appliance is reliable are long gone. The manufacturers today are living off residual brand good will.

We bought a new Whirlpool fridge last year. Besides the $60 built in water filter - I thought I'd pull the guard and clean the cond. coils underneath. Pretty much cannot access that at all. The coils are designed so there is no way to get to anything behind the front row. Looks like a motocross whoops track in there. Have to cut a big hole in the side of the fridge to get into them? Not a big problem yet but it sure will be later on.
