Normally you will see them on warm days where the sun is on the snow. Punch a hole in the snow with your boot, they congregate there.
They actually are out year round, but only evident with the white background.
How do you know Spring is just around the corner, or here already?

Took a drive in the back country. Fields of orange Poppies say spring has sprung! If you've never seen this bloom you should.

What I had hoped for and what Mother Nature delivered - two different things. Five days ago we had green grass showing everywhere. Buttercups and chirping spring time birds.
THEN - dark clouds on the horizon. It started in the early morning. By noon I had five inches of new snow and it was still snowing. Ended up with six inches of new, white stuff.
It's mostly gone now. Except in the shaded areas. But the cold temps linger. I barely cracks 45F in the late afternoon.
Brownie will just have to wait for his springtime haircut.

I have a friend who lives about 6,000 ft. outside Lakeview. He's been snowed in for 12 days, after 4' of snow that is still snowing. It snowed here, south of Roseburg, Monday morning, just a fine powder that was melted off by afternoon. That's the latest I have ever seen snow, but May 15 is guaranteed last frost. I have to wonder if the cold spring is related to the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, a thing like El Nino but in the North Pacific.

The locks have opened and great lakes shipping is going full bore agian. We still have plenty of snow for skiing here. In fact its slowing and snow here today.

Strange thing. I keep thinking spring is almost upon us here. Then I get up - look out on the porch - one and a half inches of fresh snow and its still coming down. And today Brownie has an appointment for his spring haircut.
