My Border Collie will no longer chase a rabbit. She was hot after one once and I called her off (partially to see if she would call off and because they were headed towards the road). She dutifully stopped and turned back to look at me. For some crazy reason the rabbit did a 180 and bolted straight back at her. She turned back to look at the rabbit about the time the rabbit was going straight through her legs. Freaked her out about rabbits ever since.

I just bring her to the hunting fields , the rest is up to her.

I posted a couple weeks ago about a feral cat having a litter in my shed. She moved on and took the litter, but left this one behind. I didn’t realize this is common for cats. Got some kitten formula from the feed store. My bride is excellent at caring for infants. Kitten seems healthy and happy.

I think unwanted cats and dogs make the best companions because they know that you cared for them enough to bring them in. Two of our best dogs ever were a brother-sister package from the English Springer Rescue Association. We just stumbled onto these dogs.

They were loyal, protective, inseparable and one was a great bird dog. We never had any problem and the two took over our place and had a wonderful life.

As have mentioned in this or other threads, when one died the other became despondent and just stared out the window. We tracked down the kennel they originally came from, bought a descendant dog of theirs and the remaining dog accepted the pup as his "sister" and was happy again till his final days last year.

I've noticed that the deer seem to have mother/sibling family groups, too.

Feral cat life is tough row to hoe. I have 2. One in each barn.
They get a safe place to sleep with little kibble and fresh water. Been about 3 or 4 years now and 1 comes to feeding. The other hates when I see here. But the do a good job on the rodents.

Let me add to that and see if anything to this. We noticed by accident and over several years that our dogs would bark and be wary of strangers but were far less wary around my cousins and other blood relatives. I now guess they can smell the family "pack" and are OK with it. Anyone else think this way?
