Question Re: Equip to Dump Trailer Conversions

Hi folks,
Does anyone know what paperwork (if any) needs to be done when you modify your trailer?
I might modify an existing beater equipment trailer to be a dump trailer but not sure if I would need to update my title or registration or whatever. Also, if I upgrade or downgrade axle weight do I need to get an updated registration? I'm in Arizona if that matters. Anyone have any experience with upgrading/modifyin trailers as it relates to paperwork?

Any info is appreciated.

Is this for commercial use or personal around the farm use?

Commercial I would expect all kinds of paper work required, around the farm not so much.

Just for personal use but I would be driving it on public roads to the local dump or hauling the occasional load of dirt or gravel back home. Got a new (to me) 1958 SA200 and thought it would make a fun project. I have all the parts sourced already from a couple other trailers so I don't need to buy anything.

I converted a 45 ft gooseneck boat hauling trailer to a flatbed pintle hitch with 20 ft of bed, and the back half section is a dumpbed. I never applied for any paperwork because I never expected to go anywhere with it, except up to the Church and back (3/10 mile).

1958...I wouldnt think there would be much record of what it use to be becids a trailer.

I think AZ only cares about commercial or personal, and weight.

Check the registration to see if it tells what type of trailer. If it doesn't, then you only need to notify if it goes into a different weight class.

Check your state and insurer. Homemade trailers might be illegal or not insurable making you liable for breaking the law, any damage your fault or not. When it’s not supposed to be on the road it is all your fault like being drunk.

After many deaths from homemade trailers in Tennessee they improved laws to keep them off the road. My insurer told me in 1996 don’t get caught with a trailer without a manufacturer’s tag.

I had a dump truck road usable for only farm use. Affordable insurance. If ever used even once for hire the insurance was 12X$$$. Also increases in tags and TDOT compliance.

I appreciate the reply. Good point about insurance. I’ll have to look into that. They’re definitely not illegal here as AZ will issue a VIN for home built trailers but you have to pass an inspection first. My question isn‘t about a new home build though. I have a title and current registration. Just wondering if anyone else had experience with significantly modifying a trailer and was told they would need to update their registration. Might just have to go into a local DMV and wait in line to ask someone.

I have switched a tilt style, scissor lift trailer over to an actual hydraulic dump but the GVW didn’t change, so there was nothing to change on the title.

You have to find out for your state. Some states, South Carolina being one, will provide title for a homemade trailer with necessary info. Their website provides a list of the necessary info. Look at Arizonia site. Not sure the title here ever shows if a dump or flat bed. It may but since I have only had farm trailers, lawn mower type trailers or boat trailers we don't have to register our trailers.
