Greetings,

Replaced the timing gear cover gasket and started looking for the torque specs for the bolts that hold it on.

Been through all of my manuals (including the repair manual) and the closest I came was a reference to the reinstallation of the timing gear cover in the "engine" section, which said basically to refer to chapter 3 of that section for the torque specs. Checked that chapter. Nothing. Had the crankshaft pulley bolts specs and everything else, but nothing for the timing gear cover.

I know there are general bolt torque specs, but these bolts are unmarked, grade 8.

Ideas?

Nothing in a 1310 thru 1710 manual either regarding timing cover bolt torque, all I could find is this:

Yes. The general torque specs I saw as well. Assume these were meant for metal-to-metal parts. The timing gear cover has a gasket between it and the block.

Plus, I'm not really sure what to make of the chart. The heads of the bolts are blank (except the one that goes through the alternator bracket), and being M8 (I think), that puts the torque anywhere from 9 to 26 ft-lbs, based on the chart. A pretty broad torque range.

For a timing cover, 9-12 should be adequate and safe

Thanks. It's a cast iron cover. Believe they are M8, grade 8 bolts. If oil comes gushing out, I'll tighten more, I guess.

M8 identifies it as a metric bolt, not grade hardness.

I'm aware.

That's why I identified them as BOTH "M8, grade 8 bolts." Because the hardness is germane to torque specs.

Well, After a through review, the bolt torque specs are not mentioned in the 1920 manual either. It describes the removal process in detail, then says the reinstall is the reverse, but jumps from "bolt the timing gear cover on" to referring to the crankshaft pulley and it's required torque.

Thanks anyway!

I think the answer to my question is: 'The timing case cover bolts are torqued to adequate ft-lbs.' I'll just go with that.
