Tractor idling

Thanks everyone for the advice!
It’s a 2005 so no regen system! ☮️✌🏻
In that case let it idle. If it was a Tier IV engine it is not good for the DPF converter. My local Kioti rep said if you plan on letting it run for any amount of time let it run at 1600 rpm's. Otherwise the DPF builds up with carbon that will need to be burned off more often.

Hi all,
I was wondering what is the norm for letting my Kioti 3 cylinder diesel idle between using and then doing some hand work, say for 5 to 10 minutes. Would you shut it down or let it idle? Thanks as always for the expert advice!👍🏻View attachment 807535
If you let it idle there are two things working against you.

First is that you are burning fuel which does add up in a few ways. 5 min/60 min is 12%, so you burn 12% extra while it does nothing but idle all things being equal.

The machine also racks up hours over time which eventually means earlier maintenance costs for things even as simple as oil changes.

If the engine has been warmed up to temperature cycling it on/off is not going to bother anything as long as it has a long duty cycle, meaning it's run time is longer than it's off time which will keep carbon deposits from building up. So shut it down when your not using it unless it is only for a minute or two and save yourself some dollars and extend the life time of the machine.

If it's for less than a couple of minutes, I'll let it idle. More than that, I'll shut it down unless it's sub zero weather. The cost of diesel fuel is the main driver, and I dislike stuffing $50 bills in my tank.

The real bad part is, there could be a time when the regen process is not enough to actually clean things up. Thats one reason they advise you to not interrupt a regeneration unless its necessary to do so. Interrupt the process enough times and you will be removing everything and having it professionally serviced and cleaned because a normal regen wont cut the mustard.

At 5 minutes I would let it idle. 10 minutes and longer would shut it down. Today's diesels are designed to start better.. I see guys in the hot summer time leave them and when I ask them why - the general answer I get is " you are supposed to " but a very few will go beyond that.

Well, It’s been at or over 100F here in Texas for 11 days so I let my tractors fast idle to keep the air conditioning running full blast. A cab that is 99% glass can get really hot. I also never ever park in the direct sunlight…..always shade.

I drove truck for many years and it has been recognized for a long time by the industry that shutting a diesel off will pay for any extra wear in fuel savings by a long shot. A dead idle is also not good for a diesel. That being said, if you are working it hard, a proper cool down time is needed so might not be practical in all cases. I am in Northern Alberta, and shutting diesels down, even in cold weather, is practiced by some. One guy I worked for had a timer that you could set for a couple of minutes, shut ignition off and it would remain running to cool it down properly while you went for coffee, etc.

Normally I would say let it idle but with a regen system you are loading up the muffler with unburnt particles that will need to be burned off sooner or later by a regen cycle. So anymore than 5 min I would turn her off.
sorry for not knowing this but i think i do lol what is regen cycle? Thanks

Every 6 minutes is a tenth of a hour on the meter. If it has a new/modern digital power meter it accumulates far faster than the old style mechanically driven our meter. With the old mechanical our meters, time was only correct at 540 PTO RPM/Engine RPMs. Other than that an hour on the meter could actually have been anywhere from 2 to 2 1/2 hours of real run time. Not anymore. I turn mine off.

With my old Ford, once it gets warmed up, it will shut down and restart just fine if only off for 5 or 10 minutes. So, I usually shut it off if I'm off of it for more than a minute or so.

The primary exception is if I need to maintain pressure in the hydraulics, or I am adjusting the hydraulics, then I'll keep it idling for short periods.
