Most of the wear on a diesel comes from starting, hence the reason of letting it idle.
An old wives tale, it is no harder on a diesel to start than it is for a gas burner. IMHO it came from the older diesels without the glow plugs or preheater systems we have today. Engines that had to be cranked on for a bit before they built enough compression temperature to fire up. Had to wind them up as it were.
I think in one way that was better since they built oil pressure before they fired up, just had to make sure to have GOOD batteries.
