Wow a lot of eye opening mowing stories. I feel lucky that in all the years of mowing my property, I have never hit anything substantial with a mower.
Working the night shift as an RN, Driving home , my wife hit and killed a homeless man that was drunk walking in the roadway. It was dark, street lamps weren't working, he was wearing all black clothing. He had just been released from the ER at the hospital where she worked. Local PD had brought him in to the hospital because he was having trouble breathing, turns out he was just really drunk , so they just released him out the door in that condition. Six months later the same thing happened to another homeless person, hit by one of my wife's coworkers on the same street. PD wont keep homeless drunks in custody, shelters won't take them if they are drunk or on drugs, the hospital ER doesn't have room for them.
I have a friend that I grew up with that ended up homeless. He had mental health issues and was a drug addict. He chose to be homeless not because his family wouldn't take care of him but because, he wanted to use drugs, be left alone and hang out with people that did the same. If I saw him in town. I would visit with him and buy him a meal. I gave up trying to help him years ago, he didn't respond well to people telling him what to do. It made me sad to see him like that, but I tried to provide him some comfort.
