The role of government is to protect the people so they people can make their own choices, Not to rule and dictate to the people.

People have to responsible for their own decisions whether good or bad. As has been often said stupid is as stupid does.

Seems lately our legislators are creating answers for non existent problems.

Dad used empty 5 gallon oil cans to transport fuel for the tractors when he was working away from home. Never had a problem. Now you have to have a certified container and even a specific color.

The more I can keep the government out of my life the happier and safer I am.

If they are to stupid to not know it is dangerous to pour gasoline on an open flame they definitely would not know how to put on a provided fire suit.

It’s sad when the Government has to get blamed and criticized for having to take action to prevent some idiot from pouring gasoline from a can onto an open flame.

The government shouldn't take action. The person making the bad decision should be responsible for their actions. And society & parents should take responsibility to educate people well enough to not have that happen in the first place. 99.99% of people shouldn't have to suffer with hamstrung products because 0.01% are dumb.

We evidently need another law passed! Don't you think?

I would go for a law titled "Natural Selection" that says the government needs to get out of the business of trying to save everyone.

Most people know that you can't fix stupid. You can tell some people dozens of times something is not safe, and they seem to go out of thier way to prove you right.

The problem with the government overstepping its role to try to protect stupid people from doing stupid things is that it dumbs down society, making it necessary to constantly redefine stupid. People begin to think that it is safe to do anything, reasoning that if it wasn't safe you wouldn't be able to do it. It started with labels and stickers placed everywhere to the point where some products have been rendered practically useless because of some "safety feature" that has been mandated.

People used to have to "think" when they were doing something that involved sharp edges, volatile or otherwise hazardous liquids, and machinery. It required parents to actually pay attention to what their kids were doing and instruct them in safe practices. Even then, some people still had to learn the hard way. But that is how humans have evolved for thousands of years... watching someone do something totally stupid and getting hurt would reinforce your initial thought that something looked like it might be stupid and dangerous. It made humans evolve into smarter beings since the most dangerously stupid among us eliminated themselves from the gene pool. Now in our current nanny state, "everything is dangerous" until the government deems it safe. Everything else will be banned or require a special license (along with licensing fee) or permit (permit fee) to obtain it.

I think it is similar to those kids we grew up with who had a "sheltered life" and so were unprepared for the real world. They were fairly few in our generation but it seems to be the norm for the current generation. I say that partly because of the way people are surprised and impressed when they come across a young person who seems to "get it" as being extraordinary rather than just brighter than average.
