Still foreign…..

Really not as “pure” as some of the “privileged “ likes to project!

My dad has an old JD 770 compact, with a Yanmar engine. I dropped a 7 ft cultipacker off over at his place and used it on that to plant turnips last Sunday. It worked pretty good on that. Not quite as good as the “all American” Farmall Cub that I use for that at home though.

Willy,

That’s my dad’s little JD 770 CUT. I’m not sure of the year, but my best guess would be around 1988. It is a 2wd with turf tires. The operators platform is a bit cramped for me. Clearly, it was designed for smaller people. I’m not all that big (5 ft 11” and 210 pounds) but I fit much better on my Farmall Cub, which is why I prefer that on the cultipacker.

Dad moved off of our farm (that has been in the family since the early 1800’s) when he married my mother, back in 1963. He still has the first tractor, that grandpa replaced a team of horses with back in 1950, but he has not tried to start it in at least 10 years. It is a 1950 John Deere model M.

Mom and dad moved to my mom’s old homestead, a larger farm in the adjacent town, back in 2001. The model M and the 770 are in their barn over there now.

Since they sold the house that I grew up in, out from under me at that time, my brother and I added a three room shack onto the back of my grandmas house. That’s where my wife and I currently reside. I had purchased our smaller family farm from grandma a few years before (giving her life use of the house).

There has never been a tractor with a “non-American” engine on this farm, and there most likely never will be, in my lifetime. Unless my dad wills me his 770. I hear that my younger brother is to get the model M. Kind of sad for me, as that was the first tractor ever on our farm, and the one that I first learned to operate.

Here is another fun fact Willy:

There have been lots of different tractors that were purchased used on this farm, but only two that were purchased new. Grandpa bought that John Deere model M (3) years after he took over the farm, and I bought my John Deere 4120 (4wd with loader) (3) years after I took over.

He started out with horses and I started out with my Ford 8n (which I still have and use).

While I am certainly lacking in experience with “foreign power”, having just a few hours on Dad’s Yanmar/Deere, I certainly have been “well served” by those two American-powered Deere’s (on which I have put many hours), compared to the other makes and models that I have owned or operated.

That is why I find myself in complete agreement with the OP’s user name. By golly my own personal experience has proven him right.

I was willing and did give the other brands a chance (not with a “new” purchase however). When I bought the 4120, it out-spec’d the orange and blue “foreign-powered” competition. It was also cheaper and had the closest dealer. It would have not made much sense for me to go with another brand back then (2004).
