In Praise of a Lithium Ion Battery Pack

I have 2 NOCO’s. A small one for the SxS and a large one for the shop. They great units and work when you need them.

My experience with NOCO’s. Years ago I was in a Costco Store one morning and they had one of their famous staffed sales locations set up. I stopped to see what was being pushed that day and the man was holding a small device up and declaring it could be used to jump start a vehicle.

I listen to his sales pitch and when he got to the “Todays special price for this device is, $60.00 I told the wife I think I will buy one. After charging I put it in the trunk of the car. Occasional I would get it out When going on a trip and plug it in to charge.

Never had a need or use for the device for years. The late wife and I were on the way to Florida and stopped for lunch. When we came out of the restaurant and while walking across the parking lot to our car walked by a car with the hood raised and two women staring down into the engine compartment. I asked a rhetorical question of “having problems”. One of the ladies responded with we think the battery is dead. Do you have jumper cables? I replied no and she said oh dear.

I told her I had something that was supposed to work in the trunk. I walked over to the car opened the trunk moved a suitcase and retrieved the jump start device In it‘s case. The lady asked what is that I told her it was supposed to be a device to jump start a vehicle but I had never used it and did not know if it would or not.

I hooked the device up to the battery and told her to see if the vehicle would start. She placed the key in the ignition and to my surprise it actually spun the starter and started the engine. The lady got out of the car and said let me look at that thing. She looked at it and pulled her personal luggage carrier (Pocketbook) out and dug around and found a pen and paper, copied the name, model number etc, information on the unit and declared my husband is going to get me one of those.

I still have the unit in the trunk of the car and have since also acquired one for the truck and still have not used either except for that one time at the restaurant to start the ladies car.

Those things are a lot like first aid kits, extinguishers, etc.

Useless, until you need them.
Speaking of First Aid products. A Hospice Nurse taking care of my late wife elevated my awareness of the advances made in first aid products with the introduction of water proof transparency film dressings. For skin abrasions, scratch type cuts, scrapes and small lacerations apply either an antiseptic salve or cream a small gauze pad if needed and then apply the the water proof transparency film dressing.

No problem or worries about water saturation of the wound when washing or bathing.

Last weekend, Mrs. Omega and I took a 7 hour drive to Kaufman Trailers (thanks @Hay Dude !) to pick up our new equipment trailer. We left after work on Thursday and stayed in Asheville NC for the night.

Bright and early on Friday morning, we packed up the truck with our suitcase and I hit the "GO" button on our Dodge 2500 diesel. She clicked but no go on the starter. Mind you, we're three hours from home and three hours from Kaufman in a Marriott parking lot. I inspected the batteries and they looked original to the truck (they were). I had left my battery charger for my Ryobi battery plugged in overnight and I guess it drained the batteries out enough to prevent starting.

Being the prepared sort, I got on the horn to USAA and told them I was going to need a jump and prepared to wait a while until the tow truck showed up. Then I remembered my little Lithium Ion battery pack from Amazon that Project Farm recommended in his video on such things.

To make a long story short, I hooked her up and said a little prayer and expected nothing from the 6.7L Cummins. I was pleasantly surprised when she sprang to life immediately! What a relief! Called USAA, canceled the roadside assistance and went on down the road. When we stopped for fuel, I had to do it again and it barely used any charge in the power pack at all to jump the truck. We got home Friday and I changed both batteries on Saturday. I'm buying another one for the farm, best $90 I ever spent!

Just had a dead battery last week in my Escape. Looked at the project farm clip and then ordered the Yesper jump start in your link Ordered the blue one on sale for 74.28 delivered. Thanks for the heads up!!
Just to let everyone know. Amazon has the white one now for 129.95- 50% off for $65+ tax. $71.00 delivered for me with amazon prime. Tried out the blue and worked great. It went in the Escape. This one going in the F150

I've got a small one which I try to carry, although with 2 trucks it sometimes ends up in the wrong one. One day I used the battery pack to get my phone through the day when I was using a mapping program in the cold. On the way home I stopped at the grocery store and when I came out the truck wouldn't start. I was a bit nervous about the battery pack as I had already run it down a bit but the truck started right up and made it home. The next morning I bought a new truck battery.

What really impressed me with the Noco was when it worked to start my Peterbilt.

But I still won't leave that, or any other lithium ion battery, charging when I'm not present.

You could always put one on a timer.... My understanding is it not a problem charging, its a problem when charged and left on charger for extended period of time once charge cycle is complete...

Both the jump pack and the batteries for the cordless tools charge fairly quickly. It's no big deal to keep an eye on the charge indicators while I work in the garage, then unplug things once they show full charge.

Basically, I leave nothing plugged in that doesn't have to be. Could help save a few things in case of a lightning strike, and those are common here.
