No tractor today, and no pictures, but I do have a story involving cutting wood. I was doing some volunteer work last night, clearing some walking trails in the woods with my small chainsaw. I took the 4 wheeler in as far as I could go, and when the trail got narrow I went on foot. I was just clearing the face slappers and any fallen stuff, not actually felling anything. I got to a fallen red oak tree, about 50% rotten, about 18" in diameter, and it was 12" off the ground. Since I am alone on this trail, I decided to cut it into short manageable lengths, and proceed to cut three logs about 36" each. I cut my pieces, shut off saw, set it down, then start rolling them off to the side. They are falling apart somewhat, and suddenly I get a giant flying something buzzing around my head, so I take off running. Well I call it running, a youngin' might call it something like scootin' along my chub! Usually you can go 20 or 30 yards and whatever that was buzzing your tower peels off to return back to homebase, but not this time, I hear buzzing around my head again, so I run further, and it happens again, & again. I hide behind a tree, and something buzzes past my ear, I run under low branches, it follows me. I'm swatting at whatever it was with my hat, hitting multiple times as I can feel it's got some size to it. Damn thing chased me 200 yards back to the 4-wheeler!! At this point I don't know if its one, or multiple, I just got out of there. I waited about 1/2 hour until dark, grabbed a good flashlight and went back to retrieve my trusty Stihl. I saw nothing buzzing around, picked up the saw and hiked back out.
Once I was away from it I tried to figure out what it was, hindsight is always 20/20. The clues tell me it was likely a giant female horsefly, as the buzz was not beelike, very resistant to swatting, and persistent enough to chase me a long way. I feel silly now about running from a horsefly, but I got the heart rate up and never got bit/stung, so I count it as a win overall.
