Fed up with the garden

“They” say that the worms extract all of the nutrients, and leave the soil susceptible to erosion.
What they should be saying is:

"The worms are very active, they consume much of the organic matter and mineralize it at the soil surface. The castings are large and durable".

If the castings are nutrient rich or not, I need yet to discover, but so far all looks OK.

In my case erosion is a non-issue.

I just read this thread today. A lot of interesting reads.
I don't grow a garden anymore with no kids at home to help maintain one and too much to do without one.
Just imagine all you gardeners if the production from your gardens had to feed and cloth your children and pay all the taxes and provide you with some income!!!!!!!!
Now your farming!!!!!
But I’m NOT farming. I have a hobby which also happens to cut down on my grocery bill while also giving me better quality food than I can buy.
It’s something I’ve done all of my life… dating back to when I was growing up and my parents did use it feed and cloth us, paid all of the taxes, and gave them some extra income.

No your not farming, that's for sure.
If gardening woes are too much you sure couldn't handle farming stress's.

If I would have been born a farmer, I probably would have had an early death.

I only gamble on sure things and farming is one big gamble after another.

I just came upstairs with a can of green beans that cost us $.20 two years ago. Terrible quality but so convenient. We have become acclimated to poor quality food.

We bought 240 cans of corn, peas and beans and it cost us $48. Bugs and critters do not ruin our day or food supply. No worry about too much or not enough rain. No hoses to run or sprinklers to move/service. No weeding, fertilizing or ground preparation. Grass is so much easier to deal with.

The bad news is canned veggies have gone up in price. Closer to $.50 now. We go through about 100 cans a year. It is going to get expensive to pay $50 a year.

I'd hate to have dinner at your place.

It's raining.
It's pouring.
The old man is just fed up with this crap.

Enjoy the pleasures of gardening. You made your bed......

I am lazy but smart enough to stay fed without rototilling, planting, watering, spraying for bugs, putting up fencing, weeding, harvesting and canning. Did that for too many years and it was not worth it.

As some people get old, they learn lessons along the way. Others are doomed to repeat the same mistakes until they are too crippled up to live like a pioneer. If I make it to assisted living, I will not have to "adapt" to canned food. And I won't be turning down dinner it it is offered anywhere.

I'd rather be put down like an old dog than eat mushy green beans and cream corn out of a can.
Fresh tater out of the garden with fresh dill and sour cream a medium well done prime rib with fresh asparagus and a crispy salad with fresh tomatoes and cukes. That's living.
Canned most anything is just surviving until the radiation kills you.

Our pears were harvested by deer sometime in the last two days. Not sure how the fence got broke down so they could get in?
