Good morning all. Two questions fro all the builders on here:

1. Is it a good idea to put the sheathing on frst and run it to the top plate. Then cut the birds mouth on the rafter to go over it and the 2 by 4? Hope I said that correctly!!! LOL

2. Have you used the Zip System? Is it a good way to go. I am building a 12 by 20 shed that I am insulating and putting electric in for my wife and kids to use.

Thanks

hmmm, the birds mouth is on the bottom of the rafter. The heel and seat cut are commonly called the bird’s mouth.

Correct. Is it ok to run the sheathing first up to the top plate and put the birds moputh over the sheating and the top plate?

Also, I never said the birds mouth was not on the bottom of the rafter?

Depends on your construction method. I like to square the walls and put on some or all of the sheathing while the wall is flat, then stand it up and put on the roof. A lot quicker but you need to be very careful in squaring everything because you can't adjust it later.

I'm guessing you asked about sheating first because you want to avoid notching your sheating around the rafter tails.

One consideration is you don't want to notch so deeply into the rafter that the tail becomes weak.

Another consideration is whether you intend to add a soffit that would cover this area anyway.

Whatever you do, the entire job will be 1000% easier if your foundation is plumb and square. If the foundation is off, that will make the entire framing job much more of a pain. You need to be sure the foundation and the walls go up plumb and square if you intend to sheat first and then you don't want to notch too deeply into your rafters.

I like putting sheeting on up to the top plate first, and then make the birds mouth to fit over the sheeting.

To be honest, I have never seen it done another way.

I got it. I talked with a builder frined of mine. I am square within 1/16 to 1/8 inch. Everything is plumb and level from pier blocks up. Only checked one thousand times. LOL Thanks for the replies.

I hope you have a good helper to help you set those rafters whatever you do.
