I have a 2001 John Deere 5205 with a front wheel hub seal leaking again. I just replaced the seal back in the spring and it's now October and it is leaking again. When I replaced the seal, I cleaned every part , installed new bearings, and added coating of grease around the new seal rubber. Has anyone else had this issue?

Now that you see it's leaking, have you tried jacking that side up a little so the tractor weight is off the tire then shaking the tire to see if there's ANY play or movement in the wheel bearings? Any movement between the hub and the spindle assembly says you have more problems than a seal.

Hello Harry,
Yes I have jacked up that side and there is a very small amount of movement up and down. I also checked the other side and it has a very small amount of movement with no leak. I'm not sure if there is another bearing inside the axle housing or what.

But where is the movement? It can be at the trunnion bearings where the spindle unit meets the center housing, or it can be in the wheel bearings and show up between the hub and spindle. Movement in the trunions won't directly affect the seal performance. The wheel bearings are a different matter.

With this style package, there is no bearing "adjustment". It's all predetermined by the engineers based on bearing dimensions, and the distance between the bearing races in the hub. Whatever preload the engineers decided on (and accuracy of the machine work involved) is what you have to work with. The only true variable is the condition of the bearings.

That said, what I have found in some cases is problems with the dowel spacers, bolts, and the internal threads they screw into. (Items 9 and 10 on this diagram) If those bolts and/or spacers ever get loose, getting them to tighten back down (and STAY tight) can be difficult. The spacers are a tight fit. They come apart hard, and they go together hard. If they don't, they will often work loose in a short while.

Axle housing vent plugged up?

Wondering, if that large seal is a cassette style, how did you install it.

When I replaced that seal on mine I used a full size coffee can and my air over hydraulic press -turned out it was just the right size and I knew when it was fully seated when the coffee can just started to buckle

Thanks Harry,
I remember mine was very hard to remove, but now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure i put a ding on the back side of the of the lock plate. I'll order another one with some new dowel spacers and bolts and go from there. Thanks again
