I had a buddy right out of high school who used to haul coil steel, coils about that size or larger. But I seem to remember they always hauled them on end, never on their side like that. I think they were strapped down to large pallets, and then the coils themselves separately strapped right to the trailer, precisely so they wouldn't do that to the driver. He also drove an old cab-over for that job, although I'm actually not sure how much higher they really sit in those.

That's why coils loaded with the eyes to the side are called suicide coils.

But that is the way I see them hauled. On their sides. Jon

Probably varies by manufacturer who's loading the pallets or truck, shipping company requirements, and even the material or customer requirements. I know I've seen them hauled standing on end.

Same here. Only way I have seen them on flatbeds. Of course if they are completely tarped, then no way to even know they are there much less which orientation...

I'm actually surprised I didn't see the guy hop out of his vehicle and try to grab the plane. That seems to be almost mandatory in any runaway trailer video, no matter how heavy the trailer, some boob running down the hill trying to hold onto it or being dragged down their driveway while hanging onto the tongue jack.

Some do do haul them suicide style, most don't. Almost all mills will load them to the driver's preference. Laying down, "eyes to the sky" is normally done when the consignee requests them loaded that way, and has the equipment to unload them properly.

I live 10 miles from a steel plant. They bring in rolls of steel on flat bed trailers that are bigger than that one. There is only the one per trailer and it is loaded the same way as that one. Every once in a while they don't make the curve and they have to send out a crane to lift it out of the ditch. So far I've not heard of any accidents like that one.
