Was the religion part needed?

It's like he did good right up to the point where he had to pay the ideological bills.
It is what it is. When your church is contacted before medical bills are to be paid and you must pass certain criteria, religion is in every aspect of the sharing model.

There are always people who hate anything that has any connection to anything religious. They lose their ability to think rationally and assume if a religion or religious people are involved, it must be corrupt. While there are certainly corrupt religious people, they are no more corrupt than the average person.

If you really hate religious sharing plans, don't get one. There are non-religious sharing plans, too.

I'm not sure you're understanding. It does save people money otherwise it wouldn't be a thing.
How exactly does paying other peoples medical cost save you any money? If you say having regular health insurance would cost more, so that is the savings, you than have to show that each is equal in benefit. You also have to show that the money you pay is not being tossed down a rat hole and you might never see a dime of it back.

Sounds to me that people imagine they are getting something for less when in reality they are being flimflammed. Bit like all those Auto service contracts that masquerade as extended warranties.

"Your car repair could cost you thousands!! Buy our Service contract and save big."

I won't insure a 350lb smoker...because, criteria.

You save money because you do a lot of the work yourself. Like I said, you have to play the role of the insurance company by, getting the bill, negotiating discounts, and arranging paying the bill.

Thats how.

The religion aspect of it all bothers me a bit because there is a rich history of con men that use peoples faith to prey upon them. However religious based or not I find serious issues with a cost share health care plan as described in this Thread.

..........or anything considered wellness or preexisting condition. In fact, nothing is guaranteed to be covered.

“It really is just a matter of faith that claims will be paid.”

When one of these sharing groups have more BBB complaints than a huge company like Cigna, something is wrong.

My wife had Christian Medishare starting in 2010 when o----care was enacted. Prior to that we had great insurance with Anthem Blue Cross. I stayed with Anthem (I'm still with them) but my rate increased over 10x for not as good insurance as I had before.
The ones benefiting from o-care either didn't have insurance or couldn't afford it.
In 2017 she turned 65 so Medicare and Anthem part F & D (meds). Type 2 diabetic.
So I found out about Medishare for her since the alternative was pay a penalty! She remembers Medishare was about $350/month. It's not insurance and our doctor didn't accept it. Thankfully she made it through 7 years with nothing major.
Her experience was it did pay her insulin ($25/month) and they paid a clinic for allergies and prescription (so a few $hundred).
Medishare she had a counselor who would call, talk about diet (we don't smoke/drink), exercise, etc. At the end counselor would pray with my wife.
If you research Christian Medishare online reviews are pretty bad. Looking back it avoided penalty and better than nothing.
My personal idea with insurance is to self insure. Insurance should be the highest deductible available, $10K is fine, because the savings invested it doesn't take long to exceed deductible.
Years ago a friend's Dad asked me and I explained what I thought. He was self employed and had no insurance. I said $10K is bad...but not like $1Mil hospital bill! Unfortunately he didn't listen and within a year had a major heart attack, $500K hospital bills.
