I recently purchased a late 70's , early 80's MF 255. Yesterday I decided to fix an oil leak on the valve cover and changed the oil and fuel filter. It was all good and simple until I got to the fuel filter. I don't have a repair manual (but one is on order right now) so I couldn't look up anything. I've worked on a Kubota fuel system before when my Dad ran it out of diesel one time, but this one is different. I changed the fuel filter and filled it up with diesel through the plug in the top. It looks to me like when it is full, I should be getting fuel OUT of the filter. I'm not getting it for some reason. I turned my tractor over so many times, I almost burnt up my starter. I traced the lines and cracked them in different places trying to get fuel but no luck. I pumped on the pump on the side and I still cannot get fuel out of the filter housing. Can someone help me. Thanks

Did you turn the fuel valve on the tank back on? Most likely did but thought I'd ask anyway.

That hand primer on the pump should pump the fuel up to the filter.

I have two filters that came on my Long. If I get air in the line, I purge(with the hand pump lever) all the air out the first filter, then tighten the bleeder bolt. Then go to the next one and do the same. I'll go to cylinder injector 1 and 4 next and crack those lock nuts after I'm sure the filters are free of air. Turn the engine over several times and it fires right up. Then lock the nuts back down.

For spin on filters I fill the filter half full of Lucas fuel treatment or ATF. Then finish it off with diesel fuel. Screw them on and turn the key. They always start and never get enough air to not start that way.

If you're not purging air with the hand primer it's either not getting fuel or the primer isn't working.

note: I have seen those fuel pump primers not work unless the engine was turned and stopped in a particular position. I have no idea what cylinder should be where but I've bumped the starter to turn the engine just a little and the primer would start pumping. I could feel the extra resistance when it's in the right place. I'm going to guess it depends on which stroke the primary pump is in. Up or down or in between. You may want to try that also and see if it makes any difference.

Yes sir I turned the valve back on. I also am thinking the same thing. I think the primer pump is not working. Thanks for the info. The first thing that I am going to try is turning the engine over a little at a time and see if I can get the primer pump to work. A man told me a minute or so ago that I all else fails, do what they done years ago. PULL IT down the road in high gear until it busts off. Thanks.

Just did the same thing, had to get the pistons in the right position to get the handle to prime on my MF255. You can tell when it starts to get fuel.
