One of the problems with the tariffs was it applied to raw goods but not finished or semi finished of the same material.

A coil of steel was tariffed but stamp out an item and it wasnt tariffed.

A nail factory couldnt buy coils and still compete with imported nails. They would of been better off importing nails rather than coils to make nails

Good example of why tariffs may cause US manufacturing to move to other countries.

Is that better?
There are quite a few instances where the more expensive nails would still be purchased. As a small timer, I would pay a higher price for made in USA and millions of other Americans might, too. There are also construction projects where ALL USA sourced materials are specified. I have built quite a few of them.
But if they are all imported, then there’s ZERO US jobs or factories other than boxing them up and selling at HD or Lowes.

I’d rather retain some manufacturing here and hope for better days ahead than import 100% of nails from China.

Billions in tariffs went into the treasury and were then dispersed back to farmers and others in need of help.
Plus it kept the USA in the game. Better than your idea of importing everything we consume from China.
I don’t want a chinese tractor or chinese toothpaste or Chinese meat. Using the way you constantly talk about, we’ll be doing that in short order.

I am a consumer that if I’m just out shopping and see something that I want and then see Made in China on it I will typically just put it back on the shelf. I only buy China made things on something that I really really need and cannot seem to locate otherwise.

You aren’t alone.
Some protectionism should be allowed. The counties that are destroying our entire industrial base, like China, are subsidizing their industries to simply under-price our manufacturing base.

The tariffs aren’t the way to promote US industry. Giving federal tax credits to companies that start up new manufacturing or move manufacturing from overseas to the U.S. would be the best approach. This would be very targeted without unintended consequences.

I explained what steel tariffs did to my brother in law’s industry and the resulting inflation. Tax incentives don’t have those consequences.
