You Know You Are Old When

You watch TV commercials at night and you have no clue what in the heck they are selling and you have to ask your wife what is the product for.
I thought it was just me. Even some times when you know what the product is, you wonder why someone would think this ad would make you want to buy that product. Apple ads do that for me.
Good TV commercials are getting hard to come by...
They always were.
Lots of lame tv ads when I was a kid too, biggest difference was the graphics weren't as good.

The last time that I tried to watch television was about 10 years ago while staying in a rental. There was some movie I had never seen and which is supposed to be a classic. I watched for about 15 minutes and over half of that was commercials.
When another round of ads came on I shut the darned thing off. If they were that bad in the beginning I can imagine how they'd be during the second half of the show.

Remember when cable came out over 50 years ago?

One of the features was commercial free for that 7.95 monthly charge and how long did that last?

When the VCR arrived some started taping shows to minimize commercials and a few high end machines would auto pause and resume to edit out advertising.

It's not just TV... The SF Chronicle is just a fraction of physical size and far fewer pages but what remains is about half advertising and that's not counting the inserts.

Plus it's now $70 a month home delivery.

You know an old person's house by the newspaper in the driveway!

Yep!!

My kids laugh at the newspaper. Say it’s old news as soon as it’s printed much less when it gets to the house.

What I believe the worst part is snipping classic shows to fit in more commercials. An old 30 minute show that was 25 minutes with five minutes of commercials now looks like 20 minutes with ten minutes--or more-- of commercials. The plot line often fails to make sense.

I just flip it off and tend to things that need tending.

With consolidated printing sites, it's now more like yesterday's news tomorrow. ;)

You’re so right about the commercials. When we turn on a news program, more then not there’s. A commercial on!

I still get mine for 50 cents a week ;) But since the company was sold twice since I left, it won't last much longer. When it goes up to regular rates, I'll cancel it. It's a shame, because the reporting is so good. Long, in-depth articles with follow-ups. Plus I still know several of the reporters that are still there, and still socialize with several folks that still work there. They just can't afford to print with a lack of advertising.

There's a couple of sitcoms we enjoyed and bought the complete set of cd's and when we watch them, there are scenes that are never shown on tv because they were cut to squeeze in more ads.

A disclaimer use to precede saying edited to fit format but have not seen that for some time.
