When I visited Gettysburg, I was told that after the battle there were so many bodies floating in the river that they piled up against a bridge, damming the river and threatening to flood the town. In order to save the town men had to swim into the river, at night, and clear the bodies.

I visited Gettysburg. All of you should.
Its a really depressing, but beautiful place.
You can walk in the fields where Picketts Charge took place.
It’ll stir your emotions down to your soul.

Many men died to free the salves there.

You are right it’s amazing piece of history. All of Pennsylvania is actually.

What I find quite surprising is the fact…. well first off the corporation I worked for is based out of the Philly area New Jersey area, and when I used to go out and visit on business I would try to whenever possible schedule some time off and go visit the historic sites while I’m in the area, but when I talk to coworkers. - corporate workers that are residents of that area, most of them have never been to those historic sites!

I live right in a Revolutionary War battle area. My church has war dead buried in it from the Battle of The Brandywine.
Gettysburg is Civil War of course and much much bigger of an attraction.
I want to visit Valley Forge again this summer. I’m only an hour away.

I'm just across the river from the Saratoga Battlefield and I've only gone through it a few times. More historical markers then you can shake a stick at. I would say I have stopped an read well over 3/4 of them. Many locations around here directly involved in the Revolutionary War. This was on the route the Hessian's took to go over to Bennington Vt. to loose to Vt and Mass. Volunteers. With the Battle of Bennington causing the lose of over 1000 Engish fighters it helped the American army to win at Saratoga.

Some politicians have some pretty nutty ideas about the Civil War.

This might give you some ideas....

Hmmm...

It looks like they're losing at least half the wood, and dumping the rest back into the river.

The problem with floating log jams is if a swimmer is washed into the log jam from upstream, then there is a risk of the swimmer being sucked under and caught underwater. Perhaps that is an advantage of working on the down stream side of the log jam. However, that may also increase the wood loss into the river.

Chains around the logs rather than grapples?

Overall that will be a slow process, one log at a time.

If you can wait till the water is down and it's shallow enough to wade, there won't be much to it, but all the risky stuff that you crave won't be there either :D. Back when I was a lineman we would have to wade titty deep water to cut fell trees off of power lines and put the lines back up, but rarely in running water, whenever I worked in Louisiana they always had us a Marsh Master or an air boat, the Marsh Master has an A-frame and a big winch on the back and would be perfect for what you need to do, but I doubt that there is one North of the Mason/Dixon line.
