If the ice was checked and deem safe why depth matters ? 4 inch is all someone need to go on, on foot.
The deeper the water the longer it takes to recover the body(s).

Recover or not it doesn't change the outcome, we go on rivers out here and there's very little to no chances for body recovery if one goes through... the point is as long as there's a safe amount of ice the depth is irrelevant sine you wont go through.

I'm not sure what the water temp is in the canal today but the current is quite strong. Body's aren't found for years so it must be cool.

Water cannot be colder then 32 degrees F

There's no such thing as safe ice. ;)

There's a reasonable assumption that it's safe. But it can change faster than a lot of folks realize, or they become complacent.

This was a local lake January 31, 2022. Good solid ice everywhere. 30' of water. Spring bubbling up! Had there been snow cover, I never would have seen it. I've been around spring-fed lakes all my life. I've never seen one bubbling in 30' of water that far from a high bank. Gave me the shivers. 🥶

Yep. From what I understand, cold water slows the decomposition process, and slows the body from producing gas during the decomposition process. That gas, when produced, bloats the corpse and helps it rise. Couple that with the fact that most humans reach negative buoyancy right around 30', and Bob's not your uncle.
