Coffee scoops and coffee makers

@mcmxi just kicked it up a notch!

Digging any deeper is going to go over about as well as arguing Deere vs. Kubota, over at home-barista.com. 😛
I get carried away at times so my apologies. Coffee is a big deal for me, as are tractors. I roasted some Guatemalan beans this morning. (y)

One thing to remember re coffee is that there's no right or wrong. If you like it that's all that matters. I suppose that's true about most things in life.

Nice! I'm lucky to have a very good roaster (La Colombe) local to me, and I'm never going to beat them at that game, so I just buy through them. My whole setup is also pretty modest, compared to what you see some folks spending, although I do have pressure profiling and full PID temperature control on my little single boiler espresso machine.

I guess coffee is like tractors, in that the equipment prices that seem normal to those in the hobby would spin the heads of those outside the hobby.

Sweet and ditto, but with a dual boiler espresso machine. Like many things, the rabbit hole is as deep as you want it to be. Cost is always an interesting topic, and just as a good implement can provide a lifetime of service, the same can be true for high end coffee equipment if used and maintained properly.

I was surprised how many of my euro friends have this expensive brand of coffee machine

Pretty basic here. Microwave some hot water in a 2-cup measuring cup to boiling. Pour it through a Melita filter with two 1/8th cup scoops of Starbucks ground into my cup. Perfect for me.

8 spoons of dark roast beans for 12 cups works for me. Adjust to taste.

mcmxi I like to think I learn something every day. Like many things there are some things most people don’t know a lot about and your posts opened my eyes about coffee.

I learn every day too and hope that never changes. About five days ago I roasted a Costa Rica & Guatemala blend and just started it this morning. It's wonderful and definitely something I'd drink as a straight espresso if I were into them. That's always my goal when roasting, to produce a great espresso, since some nicely textured full fat milk can hide a lot of sins.

Pretty middle of the road price for good espresso machines, actually!

Head over to slayerespresso.com. When you have to fill out a form before being quoted pricing, you know you're not buying a $30 machine from Black and Decker. :D

But, we're getting off topic, for an OP asking about basic pour-over or drip coffee. As noted in my earliest post on this thread, a scale is the way to go. Experiment with ratio a little bit either side of 1:15 by weight, for drip or pour-over, to determine what ratio you like for each bean/roast. If you change brand or roast, then repeat the experiment, as 1:14 may work best on one and 1:16 on the next.

For those looking to get into espresso, or other high-end stuff, Whole Latte Love is always a good starting point. Great store, great support, and hours of YouTube videos to help with every beginner's questions.

I bought my espresso machine, grinder, scales and a variety of other accessories from Whole Latte Love. I bought a grinder for a friend this past Christmas. She's into pour overs so I got her a Fellow Ode Brew Gen 2 from WLL.

For anyone interested in a scale for coffee, I'd highly recommend the Acaia brand. I have the Lunar 2021 and Pearl S models, both of which have been excellent.
