See? You and I can agree on some things.

Not a big deal to me to agree with you, but if it is for you, well then, rock on!

Despite that Because of that, they each were pretty versatile vehicles in their own way. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who did some good off-roading in a Beetle, although in my case it was as a passenger.

Alcohol mandatory.
I loved off roading in my Bugs. I beat the crap out of several. One time my son and I were going through a puddle that was quite deep. So deep that the floor flooded about 6 inches deep through the heater vents by the time we got through. The motor was coughing and sputtering but eventually smoothed out. We opened the doors and watched the water run out. Steam was coming out of the window defrosting vents. My son was able to lift his feet out of the water but since I was driving my feet were submerged. The heating system, once the engine was nearly submerged, was great at pumping water through the heating vents. That was a fun day.

Not to continue an argument, but 2000 vs 2024; if you dropped someone from 2000 off today, they wouldn't be Shocked by anything. They might not like the general direction of stuff, but they wouldn't be shocked. Maybe we didn't have full on 'smart phones' but there was the keyboard phones, black berries, ect. Online shopping had started, although not super wide spread. We had widespread illegal immigration, I think that was roughly around the OJ Simpson trial (more or less). Any fool would have predicted China was on the rise. They would easily understand any of our vehicles, within a couple minutes. Go back 50 years, so, 1974, ill bet the Biggest thing they would be floored by is the internet/cell phones, but other than that, they wouldn't feel they where in an alien world. They would recognize cars, and maybe take a couple minutes to adjust to them, TVs, simple progression, computers, they would understand the concept of them, even if they'd never seen one.

Now, flip side, let's take a guy from 1865, and drop him off in 1915? Sure, he's probably seen a steam train a few times, and maybe even a telegraph, but now, in 1915, we have phones, cars, air planes, radio, maybe even electric in some homes, ect. The world map was radically changed, farm help now has to be Paid...,

We are Not in the Era of of fastest technology grow in human history.

Maybe this belongs in the 'world isn't really ending' thread.

Grandpa lived 1875 to 1963. He always said he wanted a helicopter.

The world seems way different to me than in 2000.
I mean like wildly different.
You are talking about technology. I am talking about economics & culture.
One big technology change you missed was there was like no EVs, either. Now they are mainstream and soon we will be forced to drive them. Just look at California.

I'd hardly call EV's "mainstream". Certainly more than just a curiosity, but they make up a very small percentage of what's on the road. I don't personally know anyone who has one. Maybe they'll become mainstream some day, but I think that day is well in the future.

Culture? Certainly it's changed, but not dramatically. Yeah, it seems like everyone's addicted to their cellphones, which didn't really exist in their current form 24 years ago. The internet is much more pervasive, but it too existed back then. We are certainly more polarized politically now than we were then, but that too seems to come and go in cycles...when I was a teen (1960s) Vietnam was very divisive, though it seemed more generational than todays discord which is more red state vs blue state.

I agree with much of what you say, but I do think if you took someone from 2000 and gave them an I-phone they'd be completely baffled by it. Yeah, they're mainstream now but I'd say there was a steep learning curve for 'most anyone the first time they tried to use one. Not particularly intuitive.

They’d be blown away away by the cultural changes in the last 24 years

One thing i had forgotten about, maybe blocked is a better word, is California banning ICE in the near future. I saw that posted in another thread and remembered.
