Loses electrical power and engine dies jd 1020

The jd 1020 gas serial79000 won’t crank sometimes after being shut off. Doesn’t show any lights on gauges when put in accessory position I have jumped the safety switch with no results. Did a continuity test on all wires. They show good. Checked continuity on ignition switch in all positions. Check out ok. Cleaned terminals on ground and selenoid. Tractor will sometimes start and run a few minutes then shut off. I’m stumped.

Had a similar but somewhat different problem on my 1020. Never failed to crank but would just die when running. Sometimes it would fire back up but not always. Using a VOM doesn’t always show you a problem because they won’t always show a weak or intermittent connection. Vibration when running is also a problem hard to detect. Mine turned out to be a bad key switch. Be aware that there are about 5 different switches that will be listed to fit that 1020. You either have to go to JD with the serial number or match the number of posts and layout on the back and compare with the new one.

Will try to relocate ground to starter. Just recleaned four battery connections. Tractor started and ran about 10 minutes then died with no power to key on position(no lights to oil pressure and charging lights . Checked continuity in ignition switch in various positions. Tests out ok. Going to try new switch and ground for battery relocate

Just a suggestion, but do one at a time and retest. I hate doing multiple parameters and fixing the problem, but not knowing what exactly the problem was.

Relocated battery ground to starter mounting bolt. Didn’t help but will reduce any future grounding problems. Have an ignition switch on order. Changed circuit breaker and that seemed to be the problem. Will know more after brush hogging today. Thanks to all who responded
