I need to put a towable wood splitter on a trailer and move it over 100 miles. I’m trying to figure out how I am going to get it up on the landscape trailer. I was thinking an atv winch mounted on the trailer hitch. But I’m not sure how to power it. I was also thinking possibly a portable winch like this one that just uses an extension cord.

Anyone ever wired up a winch for their tow hitch?

Use a portable jump start box or extra battery with clips on the lead wires.

Depends on how permanent you want it to be. You could get a set of booster cables and cut one end off and install a plug like this on one end, the other on the winch:

Could get a spare battery and gear that up if it's something you're not going to use very often.
Use a small hand crank boat winch.
Cable come alongs

I welded a receiver hitch to the front of my trailer & used the Harbor freight 12K winch hooked to a 12 volt deep cycle battery with jumper cables. Ultimately, the battery will live in the tongue toolbox when I get everything separated/secured to protect from shorting the battery with chains/binders/etc. Haven't needed the extra battery enough times to worry about it yet.

LOL Did the cable come along one time with my Kawasaki Mule in 95 degree heat. I now have a 12,000# Warn winch and deep cycle battery on the tongue.

For a one time use, why not use a manual boat type winch?

At $209, you're 2/3 of the way to the price of a Wyeth-Scott winch which could be pretty handy for other uses. https://www.wyeth-scott.com/

Or to be real cheap, just put a snatch block on the front of the trailer and run a rope to the log splitter through the sheave and to a tow vehicle, snake it right up and on.

I used an "anderson plug", like mentioned above, off amazon. Its the red plug behind the bumper grill. Pretty solid and easy to disconnect.

I appreciate all the ideas. I still haven’t settled on a method but I will update when I do it.

For the few times that I need to use a winch on my trailer I just use my heavy duty jumper cables. They easily reach from the truck battery (extended cab dually) to the front of the trailer. Works fine for my limited needs.

Lift it with tractor or engine hoist and drive trailer to/under it.
