I have a 2006 GE 20cf upright freezer that has been running forever since long ago.
I assumed the temperature control switch had malfunctioned, but no replacement part was available.
Installed the Johnson controller A419.
It runs like new again.
Saved some money 😂😂

I installed one something like that to allow the freezer to run from 50 deg to 60 degrees. I just wanted the freezed to be used as a cooler. They are handy reliable controllers with many functions, but priced like they were John Deeres.

I did too in the chest freezer to set the temperature to 35 degree -_+ 2 for vegetables.
Love it.
Not only the controller price but everything went up dramatically in the last 3 years.😩😩
But still I can buy a used one for less than $50 from Ebay fortunately.😂😂

Plus, they tend to be super energy efficient compared to upright refrigerators.

How is it on your back?

All the best,

Peter

We have a chest freezer. When we were recently at our friend's retirement home, we noticed they had 2 upright freezers. So, we asked why they went with uprights.

The huge benefit with uprights is things don't get buried in the bottom. They can label each shelf as "beef", "pork", "fish", "vegetable" etc, and even with the genre and year and it stays sorted.

It makes perfect sense. We have a chest freezer and it's a cluster. I don't know what's-what and many things cover up many others. It's a complete waste of space, regardless of what efficiency might gain us.

There's more to efficiency then energy. We've decided we'll change to uprights when we build our retirement place.

FWIW: our chest freezer came with a plastic grid lattice like a wine/liquor bottles come in, but bigger, to make bins. We usually keep it at 18"x18" bins, but they are adjustable. It's great for us and really helps us keep things sorted. Without that, it would be a mess, for sure.

All the best,

Peter

I have been using the controller for about 20 years that Home Brewers were using to run freezers at the temperatures they want on our commercial upright freezer for our business, we also have another chest freezer for our business.

We switched to this for personal use. Easier to see what we have and we grind and mix our own ground beef and breakfast and Italian sausage so each one can have a drawer

No issue with chest freezers here as we have 3 in the unheated side of the garage. One for wild game, one for domestic meat and the other for frozen vegetables and odd stuff. Nice in the winter when it gets real cold as they don't run all that much. Summertime is a different story.

Our 15 y/o upright freezer stopped cooling, luckily we caught it before the contents spoiled. Nevertheless, some stuff was binned as we didn't have enough room in the freezer section of our refrigerators. The compressor was shot, at it lost its freon, cost to repair was well on the way to a new one. Hopefully, this new one will last as long.

No upright...but I have a Sears "Coldspot" chest freezer; don't remember exactly but the tag on it says it was built in ~1952! So 70+ years with absolutely no maintenance except for defrosting every year.
