Yes for sure... I went on a fishing trip with my buddy and we took his toyota rav4 hybrid we did 781 miles, it cost him $60 in gas and we where cruising (not careful at all about miles a gallon) and fully loaded I was very impress with the MPG.
The RAV4 Hybrid may be one of best vehicles for many today.

So.... here's some genius math that follows this same logic that they keep spouting off about.

I had a coworker complaining about how much it cost him to get back and forth to work.

He drove an older dodge diesel. His wife drove a midsized gas suv. Both vehicle got the same mileage.

So said coworker took out a loan for $5,000 on a small Kia.

He had to put another $3,000 onto the Kia to get it road worthy.

Mind you, this guy was also complaining about being broke.

I suggested that he drive his wife's SUV and let her run the kids back and forth to school with the diesel. It would save him about $100 or so a week.

The diesel would only need to be filled once every three weeks which would be a pretty decent savings.

Nope, he had to spend $8,000 to get 30mpg instead of 22mpg.
Yeah I’ve had people tell me the same thing. I say just admit you wanted a new ride and that gave you a reason, it OK.

I'm known people that used that excuse for a new ride.

The dude I referenced had the math down, cyphered, and proven on how he was saving money by purchasing another vehicle

Then he showed up with an $8,000 investment in the biggest POS Kia Soul that ever ever seen in my life.

I wouldn't have trusted that thing to get me down to the corner store, let alone drive 90 miles a day back and forth to work from where he lived

I honestly think his oil consumption was measured in MPG judging by the smoke cloud following him down the road

I asked him to bring it over to my place to fog for skeeters

I had an FO tell me he bought a new Tesla to save money on fuel. 🤔. I'm thinking, they allow you to fly this machine with such poor reasoning ability?

While I'm driving a $9000 ICE SUV he is driving a $45k car to save money.

Our public education system has failed, or they are just intellectually dishonest.

I get a real thrill every time I drive my son's car. We paid $2500 for the car and have been running it for the past 5 years. That is economical. If I want performance, I'll pull out my motorcycle, that cost me $7k, 10 years ago, and also gets 50mpg.

The one plus with a hybrid is if battery range drops m, the engine kicks in.
Maybe with a PHEV having a larger battery, but with no plug-in battery assist the Prius ICE ran most of the time, rarely off for more than a traffic light or 1/4 mile.

The brilliant hybrid system Toyota created doesn't have a slam-it starter. One of the hybrid motors is used to spin the engine up to 1200 RPM with valves held open, then in one beat valves and fuel are added and the engine is running.

If my 2007 Prius wanted to turn the ICE off above 42 MPH it held the intake valves open and turned off the fuel. Very very hard for the driver to hear/feel when the ICE was running or not.

I would consider a hybrid. But the fuel economy would have to be there to justify the purchase. Ice vehicles have come a long way with mileage.
Many are hybrids in name only with no significant MPG improvement. You get what you shop for.

Teslas only come in sedans, so they would be out for us. We prefer crossovers. More trunk space, and easier to get out of.

I had a difficult time getting out of the Tesla Y.
The X and Y are not considered to be sedans.

Am surprised one had trouble getting in/out of the Y. I find it quite easy, on par with Subaru Outback. Significantly easier than Porsche 928S or my 2013 Model S.

It's also not always about savings but about comfort and reliability.
I bought a new tractor 3 yrs ago. Could have bought a 20-30 yo tractor that ran and operated but didn't want to deal with potential issues.
I could have easily bought a used, reliable, Toyota or Honda for under $20k instead of my $50k Tesla. But I wouldn't want to drive long distances in either of those.
My choices last year was a used Lexus LS500 or Tesla Y. The fact that the fed and state gov't gave me $10k to buy the Tesla, helped the decision as well as the Tesla is just more convenient than any other car I've owned.
I'm getting to old to be uncomfortable when I don't have to.

I had a similar conversation with the dealership I purchased my 2016 Sierra from.

So I got a call from a new sales guy trying to drum up buisiness. He goes through his sales pitch on the great deals they have and why I should take advantage of these fantastic deals.

Then he mentioned that I could even keep the same payment or lower payment then what I have right now

So I told him I would be very interested in a new truck if I could keep my payment the same as what it is now.

He asked what my payment was???

I replied $0.00

Boy that got him back pedaling on his same payment statement

I explained my truck was paid off. Has been for 3 years. (I bought it 4 years ago used). The truck has 128k miles on it.

It has everything I want in it. So I have no reason for an upgrade.

On a side note. The trucks leather and fully loaded with every bell and whistle minus a sunroof and sliding rear window.

So to upgrade to a new truck set up identically, I would probably be looking at $80,000 easy. We got that truck out the door for $22,000 the week before used vehicle priced went stupid.

You are selecting a comparison on criteria which serves your predetermined conclusion.

You don't know what the FO would have purchased had he not bought the Tesla. BMW? Lexus? Audi? Mercedes-Benz? The Tesla would not only be saving on fuel costs but on purchase price and TCO.

Or he could be driving a $9000 beater. Such as a Kia Soul.

When I purchased the 2013 Model S new there was nothing BMW, Corvette, etc, I thought it's equal for the price. Also had a Mercedes-Benz at the time.

I drove one in 2016. My right knee and the center console didn't agree with each other. But the thing that drove me to a Subaru Outback was how the RAV4 suspension had the Toyota Small Car Tuning. Can't describe it other than I came to greatly dislike it in my 2007 Prius. Prius, Yaris, and RAV4 have it, in my experience.
