Skid steer fire.

Considering equipment prices today, installing a fire suppression system seems like a no brainer. Preinstalled at the factory would make even more sense. I did a quick search on "in vehicle fire suppression system" and found more than a dozen solution sites, from Ansul and Kidde to many others I had never heard of.

While good maintenance and cleanings will help, a broken hose/fitting/etc can spray flammable liquids on hot engines in a heartbeat. A fire extinguisher may help, but having seen how fast and big fires can get, you had better be really quick, have a very large extinguisher, and have previous training using it.

It would seem insurance companies would encourage such systems with discounts or something.

I just watched a video on the Cat-265, which is the replacement model for the 289 I guess. They mentioned the cab had a suspension, that isolated it from the tracks. Of coarse, it's a guy is trying to sell Cats, but he mentioned it had more torque than the next size larger Kubota. Been out of the market for a long time now, but it used to be a 247 and 257 was same machine, but 257 had higher tone or something, and a 277/297 was the same deal. Then the 279/299 had the other track pattern. They also pointed out the engine back was more completely closed up to prevent leaves/sticks/other fire hazards

My new to me skid steer showed up today. I still haven’t gotten a dime from insurance for the one that burned. They offered a lowball settlement on Thursday and I’ve not talked with them since.

Hate to hear about the insurance problems, but I pretty much expected them to come in well short of replacement... Congrats on the new machine though.

Those tracks look to be about half used up atleast, so I assume it's got some hours on it?

1073 hours. The 75-3 was the first new machine I’ve ever bought and that didn’t work out so I figured I’d try my usual approach. I’m in the 90 $42,650 so far cheaper than the new -3. I don’t have gap insurance so the replacement cost is too bad for me but I think they need to make me good for the amount I’ve paid them for. If they want to depreciate equipment that’s understandable but they need to depreciate my premiums to match. Not charge me for the brand new value and payout $12,000 less.

I’m not buying a machine with a swing out door so that brings me to Kubota or Takeuchi. I looked at buying a T8 before I bought the 75-3. I didn’t like the machine then and the t8 was about $10,000 cheaper so I really tried to like it. I went back to the dealer last week and the T8 hadn’t grown on me any. I still couldn’t bring myself to like it. I’ve been planning on upgrading my Kubota mini x since before the fire. I priced a new Tackuchi mini x while I was there and it was more expensive than the Kubota so I’ll probably have another Kubota mini x too.
