I just don’t understand what tilting them down to the rear tires does in the first place?
My rear view mirrors give me a perfect shot of what I might back into just the way they are.
The thought is when backing one would be more interested in the space close to the rear of the car than knowing about cars following. So the mirrors turn down to see the curb one is about to scrape.

Well I have seen everything now , mirrors or not.....I got a " private" message from Tradasaurus with a bunch of his proofs of why the earth is actually flat.....one was we have no pictures from space with upside down boats and planes....another was no proof how sun stays hot day after day ......wow and this is from Trad a supposed engineer ..........Trad your bringing down the average credibility of the other Tesla owners that we have some respect for !! BUT Now back to our regular programming of mirrors and reverse positions. ;)

That's my thought as well. Between the backup camera and mirrors I have a really good view in my wife's car and my pickup.

Service truck has the large fish eyes already adjusted for optimum viewing along the side of the truck, as well as a good view further out.

Then the side mirrors are adjusted correctly as well.

Then it also has a back up camera.

Mirrors pointing down at the back tire would p#ss me off. I'm usually backing into a parking spot and need to be able to see how close the vehicle is next to me.

Or down the length of the driveway with my service truck since i havent gotten a turn around spot built yet. Which in the dark is a pain. I have the work lights adjusted to light up beside the truck as well as behind it.

I use the fisheye to follow the curve of the driveway and the regular mirror to look for my wife's car and to judge distance.

The Internet is full of places for people to ruminate on ridiculous ideas in an echo chamber.

It's about seeing your rear tire for parallel parking. Some people live in places where they never have to parallel park, but for those who do, this is actually a pretty nice feature.

I remember back when I worked in Philly, having to pause a few seconds to manually steer my mirror down using the electronic control, before backing into a streetside slip, as traffic was whizzing by. Would've loved this feature, back then.
I just pull up and whip into the parking spot when parallel parking.

That was covered in drivers ed class in highschool and part of my driving exam.

I have no trouble with my wife's car or the pickup.

Back then, we didn't have power mirrors.

Heck, my first car only came with a driver side mirror

I've never once considered powering my mirror down in the car or truck to see the curb.

When I get insulated by a guy who truly thinks the planet is shaped like a pepperoni pizza, I take it as a compliment.
His pro Tesla rants probably actually hurt Tesla sales 😂

Video proof the Earth is flat! It is a disc atop four elephants on the shell of a giant turtle!

On a serious note,"Terry Pratchett's Hogfather" is one of my favorite movies no matter it is a 3 hour made for British TV movie. Not for you if it bothers you that Santa Claus might be a bit different on another world, where magic is just another profession. Or that Death walks among us, or that Death has a human granddaughter (first video role of Michelle Dockery of Downton Abby fame).

Why would the plane or boat be upside down??? Its just gonna stay perpendicular to the ground/water on its heading. Wouldn't that be true for vehicles as well???

I'm getting a headache just trying to figure out that thought process

Trad, hold a toy plane over a globe. Then spin the globe.

That should answer your question about why you don't see a boat or plane upside down.

Now hold a torch to simulate the sun. And spin the globe again

Parking in Philly is tight, you need to back in, and even then most spots are not long enough for my pickup.

With my van or pickup trucks, it's always been easy, since they have the little fisheye mirror in the corner of each side mirror. I can easily see the right rear tire when backing into a parallel parking slot. But with a sedan that lacks those fisheye mirrors, angling the right power mirror down is a life-saver.

We also had to do this to pass our driver's test, 35 years ago. But you just had to be within a foot of the curb, IIRC. On tight old cobblestone streets in Philly, being a foot from the curb means you'll be missing some driver's-side components from your car when you return, as they've been swiped off by a passing bus or truck.

6" or less to the curb for us.
