You Know You Are Old When

One of the local airports I used to fly my ultralight into is now a Meijer's store.
They also flew a lot of old war planes into and out of it back in the 60s. It was a really cool place to hang out as a kid.
The road at the bottom of the picture is US33.

I think we talked about that before. The only planes I ever saw there were the two coupes. That was back in the winter of 1986-87 when I had a wholesale flower route for Pickerals (sp?). Maybe a Cessna as well.

Remind me of why the B25s were there?

Our municipal airport didn't have fences until after 9-11. That changed everything in aviation.
South Bend was similar. You could drive your car right out onto the ramp, down the taxiway and onto the runway if you were so inclined.

In fact, had some drunks to that on occasion.

Pickerels.

They were converting them to corporate planes, with interiors, seating, avionics upgrades and engine maintenance.
The facility was also a dealer for Seabee amphibious planes, there is one in the picture on the right side.

Cool! Thanks.

Do you remember the old Sportsman's Air Park on Day/California road west of Elkhart? They sold amphibious planes there in the 60s. Lake Buccaneer, as I recall. My dad worked on California Rd for a small architectural firm where the career center is now.

Yes, I do. In fact, Dad flew us in there a couple of times when he had his C172. I think one of his friends had a Cub based there. Was a cool place with all the old tail draggers and fabric covered planes.
I think there was also a private strip just west of County Line Road/Ash Road, on the north side of CR6/Cleveland Road, where an A&P did repairs and inspections.
There was also a private strip north of me, at the intersection of US20 and CR23. Was a NW/SE runway, ~1000 feet long, downhill to the SE. The guy that lived there actually flew a C172 into and out of it. I flew into it a couple of times in my Flightstar ultralight. Can't remember his name (it was Milt Hatfield), but I think he built the pancake plane that hung in the SB airport terminal building. May still be there, I haven't been in that part of the terminal for a few years.
On SR15 south of Jefferson School, Kropf Manufacturing had a landing strip that I helped build back in the early 70s. Bob Kropf, the owner, flew a Piper Apache and then later a Piper Aztec out of that strip until shortly before he passed in the early 2000s. I could often hear that Aztec's big 540 Lycomings sing when he took off, as it's only about a mile from my house, and when the wind was out of the east, his downwind leg went over me.

Lots more stories of all the little strips I've been into around this area over the years, unfortunately many no longer exist or are in use.

Yes, I remember the one at Ash south of the Toll Road.

My friend's father in-law had a strip north of McKinley somewhere around Buckeye as I recall. He had a Tri Pacer, I believe. After he passed about 20 years ago, they sold the plane and turned the strip into a lavender farm.

Wasn't there always one player that was way faster than all the rest? Always gave him the ball.
Man that brings back some 60 year old memories.

We would spend more time trying to identify the fastest players, and the ones that would run to the left or right, than actually playing the game!

You could adjust them somewhat with the plastic nubs, but it wasn't terribly reliable...

Pretty sure we still have the game...somewhere!
