Ugh, I don't need to see the bill to get an idea of the pain you just felt, you summed it up well.

Could there be some air in the cooling system?

I have heard that a common problem on many diesels is that they are run so lean that cylinder wall temps can get out of hand and cause severe cavitation which creates issues with engine temperature control.

I looked at the cam & lifters and they looked pretty good
Sleeves looked good
It only has 94k and 8500 hours on it

Anyone else operate a large displacement diesel experience a lot of cooling fan cycling?
Everything else I have run seems to find 195* and sit there.
This HT570 will climb to 210, kick on fan, cool off to 195 then repeat the cycle.
I know a lot has changed with diesels, but this doesn't seem correct

Any chance your temperature pickup for the fan is causing the fan clutch to short cycle? Sending unit for the actual temp is reading wrong? Thermostat put in backwards?

Does the PCM pick up temp from the sending unit, then tell the fan to kick on? Thermostat is new.

It does this endless cycling of heating up to 210, fan for a few minutes, back down to 175-195, then starts climbing back up to 210.

Empty truck or loaded, does same thing.

Talked to a few of my “brain trust” locally and one of them said “at least you know your fan works”.
Yeah, sure that’s good, but why does it keep heating up.
Another one of the trust says “EGR diesels purposely heat up to keep the EGR clean, then the fan kicks on.”
Makes sense.

My other diesels don’t seem to do this, though.

I would think with a fan cycling that much, it’d be wore out pretty fast.

Not sure, I would assume so but you know what ass-me does.
Thermostat is new.
Installed in the correct direction if it is possible to install it backwards which I think it is in your rig, may be wrong on that tho.?
