I was putting my chains on my gc2310 prepping for winter, I jacked up the rear and found the right wheel was very hard to spin, the left spins freely. Thought it might be a stuck brake, removed the linkage and hammered the lever to the rear, had little to no improvement. Any idea what is wrong?

Thanks!

is this with both tires off ground or one at a time off ground?

Yes both wheels were off the ground. Turned out to be the brake sticking on thee right side, I hammered it back and forth which helped, then I hammered on the shaft it pivot's on, and now both wheels turn equally free. Problem solved!

cool.

I did not expect that there were brakes on both sides.

Since the brake is "wet" I expected it to have one brake inside the transmission?

I will have to find some time to look at the diagram.

There are two linkages , one on each side.

I looked at the GC2300/2310 parts books, and they show a single "wet brake" as @ray66v mentioned on the right side of the transaxle, just like my 2022 GC1723EB has. On mine, although the brake pedal is on the left side, there is a cross bar, and the linkage to the brake is on the right. There is also a cable on the left side, but this is for the differential lock which has a smaller pedal just to the right of the brake pedal. Is it possible you had the diff lock on or stuck? There are also additional linkages on the left side for the mower lift, and for the power take-off clutch plus front and rear PTO engagement. YMMV.

I will take a look this afternoon after church and confirm.

2010 GC2400 has brake rod each side.
here is adjust procedure from service manual.
Remove and free the brake rod on right side.
Adjust brake rod on left side.
Loosen lock nut (1) (right-hand thread), and lock nut (2)
(left-hand thread). Adjust turnbuckle (3) so free-play is
correct for brake pedal.
Secure lock nuts against turnbuckles.
Adjust brake rod of other side in same manner.
Make sure lock nuts are secured when brake adjustment
is complete. Check operation of parking brakes after
adjustment is made.
never dug into specifics as to why rod on each side, possibly redundancy?
do know a 2015 GC1710 also has rod on each side. do not remember if the GC1725MB I work on has or not.

edit: looking at parts breakdown the 2 side pawls on transaxle are same part number and they look to be (have NOT dug into service manual) hooked onto the 1 shaft that runs through transaxle into the wet brake.
very possible 2 linkages are used to balance the forces on each end of that shaft (hence the adjust procedure) as well as providing mechanical redundancy.
who knows. my stuff works so not gonna spend lot of time on this.

there is, at least on my 2010 GC2400, 1 single "wet brake" inside transaxle.
however there are 2 linkages (one each side left and right) from pedal SHAFT on 2010 GC2400 that each terminate onto 1 shaft that looks to run thru the whole transaxle. lot of part numbers left and right are the same.
