I fear in the next war the surface Navy(s) will go the way of the horse in the beginning of WW-2.
Especially the aircraft carrier.
yup warfare is rapidly changing....cyber, EMPs satellite interceptors,Bio, etc ....and probably several other means we don't know about.

Economic weapons could be the most powerful in the long run including those dastardly tariffs. Think ignoring China might be a mistake in that regard. They have been "at war" with the US for the last two decades. Their long game has never been denied.

Inflation was / is global. Good grief.
Obligatory: Tariffs tractors
And because a news channel said auto insurance went up x% you believe that rather than your own checkbook?
I'll guarantee you my insurance, utilities, and groceries did not go up those amounts. I write the checks. Did not happen.
Double Good Grief!

My monthly Allstate auto policy has increased about $18/month over the past 5 years. Not bad for 5 vehicles. Insurance rate differences are largely based on your location.

Home Owners insurance is through the roof in California IF you can get it…

$3100 2 years ago and now $4300 and I increased my deductible from 5k to $7500.

Auto is up 45% last year and about the same increase this year.

Gas and Electric way up… almost 60 cents a kW now in the evening hours.

Gasoline is now under $4 with the off brands… was $5 so it’s dropped.

Water Bill way up too… folks kept conserving so water company said no choice but to put through large increases…

I had been buying good batteries for $69 to $75 and now you can double it.

The $65 smog inspection fee is now $99

The cable rooter guy was $85 and now $150

Burger King Whopper meal was $12 and change and now just under $18… fast food minimum wage is now $20 an hour and prices reflect this.

Three increases in the daily newspaper in the last 12 months… now $81 a month.

Landline Telephone service before any toll calls now $72 a month.

And credit score

And credit score
Credit score excellent so maybe the increases are just bigger in the coastal states.

Friends in Florida are really getting hammered on insurance too.

It’s not like homeowners in California even covers earthquake which is separate and extra.

More than a few of my friends that retired 5 to 10 years ago thought they had the numbers worked out pretty well and a few are becoming concerned having not figured the jump in prices.

It’s also hitting my property management business as more small time operators are cashing out… the costs are up but the few percent allowed when increasing rent is pegged at half the cpi…

From the answer l received from the insurance rep, the credit score aspect as an insurance marker has to do with dependability as a ritual.
If one is diligent with their debts, the insurance companies research shows they are dependable and diligent as a driver and home owner as well and allegedly, are offered better rates .
My state has some of the highest insurance rates in the country (perhaps not quite as wacko as yours) so by the insurance markers, my state must have a lot of deadbeats.

Good thing you all have the option to pack up and move out of the country. Good luck to you
Did just that, retired and left, enjoying living in a country where people don't hate each other and the culture is not politics.

Having seen nothing like the claimed increases, thought I'd ask AI as a non biased non-political, non sensationalized source.

  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that auto insurance premiums increased by 20.6% year-over-year in 2024
    3
    .
  • Insurify data shows that the cost of full coverage across the U.S. increased by 28% between June 2023 and June 2024
    2
    .
  • Bankrate reports that the average cost of full coverage car insurance rose to $2,543 in 2024, an increase of 26% over the previous year
    5
    .
While the exact percentage varies slightly between sources, it's clear that auto insurance rates have risen substantially,
with increases ranging from 20% to 28% on average across the United States.

No where near the sensationalized claims by the entertainment news channel.

re: Food costs...never mind that executives of a major grocery retailer (Kroger, who certainly acted alone and no other grocer followed this practice /s) admitted to Congress they inflated profits at a rate greater than the rate of true inflation because they thought they could (and it appears they did) get away with it because the "news" outlet in question never mentions that while blaming the total increase on inflation to fit their narrative.

You’re denying groceries having gone up at least 21.6% in the last 4 years? You’re joking right?
Fortunately I keep very detailed spending records and can & will answer that question honestly. but not right now. Have to check in to the coal mines for my shift.

Well, that was until you outed yourself as one that only trust biased sources and everything else is ":D :D :D"
AI has made many headlines lately for being very biased, and political. You must have missed it.
I’ve played around with it and not only is it biased from the programmers, it’s often completely wrong

Yep. It’s not the AI, it’s the people who program the AI.

California is a different world.
unchecked diseases spread .... since I'm in the area where it has.

You get those negatives when single party rule dominates the agenda and also collaborate state to state to help get a unifying hold on control and power. Secular/hijacked societies from states like California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado etc.where leadership is often imported to conduct policy with the support of huge money and influence from the elites. They are vested in multi-state ownership, property, resorts, retirement homes, etc all in areas of scenic beauty and diverse recreation. Pretty easy to figure the bottom line here.

The middle class folks who live and work among this are caught with a couple choices, survive under their rules or move out.

importing politics and people with outside financial backing has ruined Oregon. Lots of people moved up here from California both elites and those escaping the high cost of living and regulatory overreach. Funny how this was the start that drove up the cost of living and influenced the culture here. The very thing they were trying to get away from.
