My YM2310 wouldn't turn over. The solenoid would pull in, I could hear it, but the starter motor wouldn't spin. Suspecting the contacts in the solenoid were bad, and the solenoid being the type that doesn't come apart, I bought a new solenoid. Problem solved. Now, less than a year later, I'm having the same problem. The solenoid pulls in but the starter won't spin. If I try turning the key several times the starter will eventually spin and the engine starts right up. The starter spins the engine plenty fast so I don't think it's the battery or and connections. So, instead of buying another solenoid at about 70 bucks, should I just buy a gear reduction starter? If so, is there a particular brand I should buy? Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Eric
Just rebuild the solenoid and starter. The whole reason for having an old Yanmar is that they were originally built with the absolute top quality rebuildable components. They were designed to be fixed. You aren't going to be able to replace OEM Yanmar components with aftermarket parts that have that combination of qualities.

Now having said that, the solenoid itself is almost an exception. Early ones came apart with screws -those were easy and lasted forever with normal maintenance. Some later ones were in a crimped cannister. Those are more difficult, but not impossible to get them apart to clean the points inside....it's always the points inside....

The starter itself is easily fixed. Just take it apart and I bet you'll see how it works & what it needs.

He has a solenoid that is metal shell formed over. Meaning, if he tried to open the solenoid up, the entire outer metal shell would be destroyed. I've seen these before. It forces a person to only buy a full solenoid replacement and not to rebuild it.

Just so everybody knows, the starter I bought from the eBay seller worked perfectly. I am a little upset that the solenoid that I bought to replace the original one that went bad cost me 70 bucks and a whole new gear reduction starter with solenoid was only about 20 bucks more. The original starter motor is still in great shape, it's the crappy solenoid that can't be taken apart easily that was the problem. I am going to save the original starter motor and am going to attempt to take apart the roll crimped case solenoid when I don't have anything better to do. Crack a beer and crack the case. Also, I need to give a shout out to bmaverick for the suggestion to get a gear reduction starter. It for sure draws less current and turns the motor over just fine. My now 45 year old tractor starts up quickly in cold weather and continues to run great. I love my Yanmar YM2310. Sometimes I wish it was 4wd but most of the time it doesn't matter. And since this year it is getting new tires all the way around the traction is only going to improve.

If it works for you is what matters! Just had mine out Yesterday Count of 5 oil light went out and it fired right up. The org. I had rebuilt in 5-/2011 72.00$ And My Tractor stayed all Org. Except the Solenoid and Bushings the starter. Big plus for me! Sounds like a Hard starting problem and cold weather having to do that with another starter? Cold and slow in the is pretty normal. Olimpia Washington is 35 Deg right now so there you have a good opinion.

I would rather have kept using the original starter but couldn't get a decent solenoid.

I know what your saying but I can't understand Why? Yanmar USA? Kind of a unusual problem. Fredricks show the YM2310 and the Ym2500 both ose the same Solenoid SS-502 The YM2500 uses the same starter and Solenoid as the JD.850,950 so a JD. dealer should have the correct one. Your on the other side of the US. from me but I would think that to be true!.

All I know is that the solenoid I replaced was made with the rolled crimp of the solenoid case and the new replacement also had the rolled crimp. I bought the replacement solenoid from either Fredricks or Hoye, But I think it was Fredricks. In any case, both solenoids had the roll crimped case which is not made to be taken apart. Or put back together. And paying seventy bucks for the thing that started to fail after only 6 months really made me mad. So I coughed up another 20 or so dollars and got a complete starter motor with solenoid. Hopefully it will last longer than 6 months. Before I even replaced the first solenoid I made sure that the problem was indeed the solenoid contacts and not a battery issue or a bad connection issue. These bad connection issues and bad battery issues are so common it was the first thing I checked.
