Ym1600 (can of worms)

... thats when i dropped the pan and saw what my $1500 really got me. anyways, im just trying to make lemonade here.
I've won more gambles like that than lost. Net positive overall. (example. $25 for both!) But sometimes abandoning a project is the best solution.

Maybe part it out? That could recover most of $1,500. Looks to me that restoring this could be more expensive than replacing it. Is the rest of the tractor worth putting money into just the engine?

The 2TR16 also has a Marine 2GM20 sibling that is fully interchangeable. It may even be the same engine, just the engine ID plate is changed. Over in the boating forum, someone owns a boat that had the tractor engine swapped in.

Yanmar 2tr16 - Cruisers & Sailing Forums

Here is a fully restored 2GM20 engine for $1,400
Yanmar 2GM20 16hp Marine Diesel Engine Package - Calvins Marine

This is a rare engine manual. With it you can determine what engines can swap into your machine.

Pay attention to items that compare to the 2TR16.

Now, the 2TR16 has a direct sibling engine in series, it might be a perfect drop in. 2TR19.

This manual hints that the liners are different and the block is the SAME.

Piston and rings are different, but the crank, connection rods, and such are all the same.

This way, if you can not find a 2TR16 engine replacement and a 2TR19 is available, it should work.
Then change the decals from YM1600 to YM1900. (y)

These are small files I can add here. However, most manuals are too large to add to TBN, so the YTOG hosts them all.

2GM20 is the marine version of YM2000 (2TR20) with different manifolds, water circulation, etc on it. And I think a windup or motorcycle kick starter secondary starting system for reliability in an offshore small commercial fishing boat.

But I expect a marine takeout could be just because the owner wanted to repower, or could be as bad as this engine - because it likely has been in service since the late 70's.

Yanmar's major emphasis is marine, I expect the marine versions outnumber the tractors.

I just added the 2TR16/2TR19 engine parts list. The two engines can be swapped with one another.

As soon as I fired up my YM240 my cousin said he recognized that clatter. Same as the small commercial fishing boat he was crew on in Alaska one summer.

Just had my 2000 out for first full mow of the season. Bought from a UTDA dealer 2008. ASIS. Org. Gladly gave him the asking price.2800$ In the high 900tach, hrs that I put on it! Had to repair/Rebuild the starter. Not much to a rebuild on that tractor or cost. Shop to split my ford was only 1200$.New 2 stage clutch pressure plate and had to repair the shifter. It has a loader on it also. Your only looking at a few hundred dollars in parts and your time. From the posts and replies I don't think that to be a problem. No busted block your most likely good. Ever heard the term Turn a Crank? Repair the crank shaft! Not hard to do. Worst case most likely. Like to see the damage to crank shaft! Pics. My of YM2000 then and now all Org.. Gladly repair/rebuild this one if I had to. If it's repairable busted block Etc..

1400 bucks for a replacement engine seems like a good deal. There would be shipping of course unless you could pick it up yourself. You tractor in good running condition would be worth more than 3 grand. Just look online to see.

I mis-spoke above. 2QM-20 marine diesel, is the marine equivalent of the 2TR-20 (YM2000) engine.

From an experienced person in a boating forum:

Google shows several listed for sale in the boating world.

Another application of the basic engine was ThermoKing semitrailer reefer units, 40 years ago. That might be the cheapest source for a rebuildable core.

For future reference if that site ever goes away.

There is a 2QM15 and has hits for the 2TR15 and 2TR16 engines. Yanmar supports these engines even today.

Found the service manual for it here, all in English.

Here is the Parts Manual,

With the rear mounting flange removed, it 'could' mount to our YM tractors.

It would be nice to find an engine to repower keeping the YM1600 going via a marine diesel or a 2TR19 upgrading the YM1600 to a YM1900.

If you can't find the "correct" motor, how much similarity is there in engine block dimensions between the 2TR13 class and 2TR16, 17, 18, 19?

I had added the manuals a few posts back. The 2TR16 and 2TR19 are swapable.

The 2TR13 nor 2TR15 are too much work or will not swap in due to different bell housing interface differences.

i bought it from a guy who said he ran it out of fuel and couldnt get it to start. it came with a brushhog and 4 new briefcase weights. so, after priming it and still not getting it to fire i covered it in a wool blanket and set the heat gun on it (its like 25degrees in the shop). after that i was able to get it to cold start for literally only a couple revolutions before it made an atrocious squeal and dead stopped. i got it to do that a few times then figured i had bigger problems. thats when i dropped the pan and saw what my $1500 really got me. anyways, im just trying to make lemonade here.
How much do you "need" this tractor? The way I always look at the economics of fixing vs replacing something is: what would it cost to buy a new/similar one?

Exactly. One reason why we post replies of possible engine swaps or links to a new refurbished head with all the hardware too.

It is possible to find another YM1600 or YM1900 tractor. Then use the broken YM1600 as a spare parts machine. Indeed it is best to look over every single option before venturing out blindly to solve the problem.

The cost of full overhaul the engine or find a full replacement tractor is a strong choice to consider.

There are 4 FB Market Place YM1900 tractors listed across the USA right now.

Several YM1600 too,

Crank shaft?...... Not that bad is my guess. There is a oversized main bearing also. You may have to turn it! Tell tale!!...... How about a pic.. ?

Looking into this the YM1600 Crankshaft . The same is used in the 195,240,1600,1700,1900,,2000,2210....... Parts problem? Doubtful LOL;;;

Reading along and looking at the pictures of the not running engine, I'd say the original owner put his oil changes on a very low priority bases as in never changed it.. What a cruddy, sludge loaded up motor.
