I get horse hay from a farm 7 miles away so I just get them one load at a time with truck. There was a guy before me getting a very large trailer load 7 HOURS away. Their buildings were empty now waiting for the first cutting. The two bundelers they have steel strap 21 bales together so one fits in a truck bed. They just bought yet another Deere, a cabbed 6 series.
Amazing operation and last year they put up 40,000 bales!

Those balers with bundlers are a work of art. Very complex machines.
40,000 small squares isn’t really all that much in terms of tonnage (40,000x 40lbs each = 800 tons), but its a lot of bales through their balers and to store in barns.

Around here, they get $10 a bail for Coastal Grass. $15/bail for Alfalfa. I'd say that would be a pretty good take for 40,000 bails. The round bails go for around $120. This is a good time for grass down here. In another month or two, it will be too hot for even scrub brush. There's been times of little rain where cattlemen feed cactus to the herds. 😲

I miss having horses but I DO NOT miss having to haul and put up hay. Nope don't miss it at all, started working hay at age 13 and at 72 I'm glad to be done with it. Finding good hay was getting more difficult, so much junk and weeds being sold for "Quality" hay that at the end we were having to go 50-75+ miles one way to get something that we did not have to throw at least a third of it away because they would not eat it.

Sure would make life easier if we could get those prices here. If we have a surplus to sell during the winter it’s $4.50 1st and $6 for 2nd

4x4 1st cutting round bales $50 and they are just starting to move. As far as I know we are the highest price seller in the area.

I just pay someone to haul and stack my horse hay. I did it myself for too many years. Now, its easier to pay some younger guys to do it. Our Fjords only get grass hay. Alfalfa hay is way too hot for them. Alot cheeper to keep than my arab and quarter horse that lived on alfalfa.

Alfalfa $15.00 here also. Local guys haul it south to Shelbyville, Tn. for the Tn. Walking Horses and Franklin Tn. Sell every bale they can come up with

Horse hay I got bales are 14x18x40 roughly and $13 so $273 for 21 bundle. Second cutting. It wouldn't pay for me to buy a baler and equipment when they're so close by.
