I had that happen when I was a kid. Went screaming to my dad!!!!

Reminds me of the leeches scene in the movie Stand By Me.
I had that happen 1.5 years ago while clearing a building spot on my property

I had a mini panic attack and then yelled to my wife to bring me her tweezers. That's a blow to the old ego when your down there with a pair of tweezers

The laughing from my wife didn't help matters

I heard owls all the time going outside after dark in Vermont. I just didn't realize that was what I was hearing.

Your average person just assumes they make a "Who Who.... Who who...." sound.

The Barred owls make that sound, plus a "Whooooaaaa!!!" Sound. And when I tick them off by accidently spot lighting him, they can sound like a chimpanzee

Reminded me of a story.

My BIL and I were bowhunting in a swampy drainage area. He was on one side of the swamp I was across the swamp approx 300 yds from him. As light drifted away and about the time to come down he hears whooooaaaa (as you described it above). It was loud and began whooping and almost sounded like grunting. They went berserk.

Incidentally a small town about 20 miles away had some animals escaped from a zoo/petting zoo area.
He wouldn't come down. At first he thought it was me messing with him. Yes I have been known to "startle" him a few times. Especially during bow season. 😁 😂

I waited for him at the truck for a reasonable amount of time for him. Nope notta. This was in the days before cell phones. I walk in there to him and he just starting to climb down. He thought a orangutan or chimp from the zoo had wandered in there. He said all I had was my bow, I won't gonna come down and face that monkey like that...

Bobcats have a woman screaming sound. I have heard a few before. Interesting to hear and watch when I can. They say a fox in heat makes the same sound. It may have been that too ??

They are extremely vocal and have a decent vocabulary of sounds they make.

I wasn't sure what I was hearing at first. But a day or so after we moved out to the property, I had one kick off sounding like a chimpanzee.

My dog and I disturbed it's hunt and we were being told off

After a few days of hearing it, I realized it had to be an owl.

I found a video on YouTube that identified the owls by the call it makes and thats when I realized it's a Barred Owl.

After about 3 months on the property, I started seeing him on one of the posts for the cow pasture across the street.

Either on the post 3ft from my mail box, or one of the posts further to the north.

One night he was in an oak above the camper carrying on. My German shepherd did not like that and I found her tucked into her hidy hole next to the bed. Apparently she didn't like what he was saying

Rabbits will screech as well when being attacked. It will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck.

I never realized, but box turtles will hiss.

My weiney dog had dragged a box turtle through the doggy door. But apparently the turtle had enough and fought back.

I went out onto our sun porch and found both our Jack Russel, and weiney dog cowering on the couch. They refused to get down off from it

I walked around the couch and heard a Hiss come from the corner

Thats when I discovered a very irate Box Turtle under the TV stand

Kinda...

We've got a Russian tortoise. What you're hearing isn't so much of an aggressive hiss, as it is when the head goes in the shell that forces the air out of the lungs. Not much room in there, I guess.

Which reminds me that we don't see many box turtles around here anymore, whereas when my kid lived in Stillwater, OK, they'd have several in their yard at any given time.

We've found them on trails in Missouri when hiking. Just not around here anymore.

I do recall finding one in our back yard back in the late 70's. I showed it to my dog. He sniffed it several times then lifted his leg on it. 😖

I felt bad for the thing, so I went and got a bucket of water and washed it off. ;)

Hmmm..... I didn't see it's head retract into the shell.

It had it's mouth open, and a little saliva came out when it hissed a second time
