No need to light, with gasoline. In fact, it probably works better if you don't light it, as it's the heavier-than-air fumes that do the killing... essentially suffocating them.
I guess that lighting it off after they're all dead the next day can be bonus fun, but I'm usually curious to dig it out and see how big it was.
