Pros and Cons of allowing Cell Tower on Property?

With Satellite I was spending thousands on tree removal every couple of years.

I had offered the home as a rental and without cell or Internet 98% of those interested dropped out.

I spent the money for Internet and the renter I ended up renting to didn’t want it… go figure.

No trenching… it was all bored with 3 boxes along the way… just like work I had seen along the State Highway.
Cable company did directional boring in our neighborhood about 10 years ago. They stopped doing overhead lines. Then about 2 months ago, AT&T directional bored the entire neighborhood and made anyone that had their DSL internet or copper land lines convert or cancel. No choice. There's a big box at the end of every street, and a small pedestal between every other yard on both sides of the street. No cost to convert. And the monthly internet went down by about 1/3 cost.

I may change to one of the discount services. US Cellular was just bought by T-Mobile.
We've had T-Mobile for many years. Their customer service is great! Their signal in corn fields is lacking, but getting better every year.

My house is 1700 feet from the roadway. I wonder if AT&T would service me as I have copper lines still?

I don’t see that happening here but anything is possible and copper theft would be reduced if it did happen.

Copper theft from utilities to to rail lines and parking lot lighting is a daily occurrence.

In 2017 I had zero bars at home… nothing registered.

Now I have sometimes 2 so no longer necessary to leave the house for a larger file… time of day also makes a difference as signal is very strong at say midnight and not so strong afternoon and evenings.

Still will get scrambled by aircraft flying overhead which is very real.

It’s amazing that 150 feet up the road can change everything…

I’m on several provider lists but Verizon rep told me as only a few are impacted as in less than 40 it’s not a priority…

We barely get one bar here, and even with a signal repeater. most of my house does not get good cell signal.
I find IP phone calls on my cell phone are hit/miss as to how well they work and I have a pretty recent phone.

I have T-Mobile, about 5 years ago reception was almost non-existant on my property. Reception improved greatly around the same time PG&E started cutting trees down en masse. Coincidence??

I have T-Mobil for work and Verizon for property management.

Often the performance will vary even when side by side…

No rhyme or reason.

Surprising in a metro with millions and in a city with 460,000 population to find neighborhoods without service.

More surprising is a few weeks back I was in Nevada and had excellent coverage yet sparsely populated.

Perhaps a combination of easier to install towers (I.e. more towers), coupled with better range due to fewer obstructions?

We have zero bars here on AT&T, and T-mobile, despite what the coverage maps say. Verizon is occasionally one bar, so not enough to be worthwhile.

The signal from towers has significant ground effects and reflections, so in hilly terrain, signal strength can vary substantially in fairly short distances, as many here know first hand.

All the best, Peter

My boss at work was really annoyed when I did not pickup…

She said I’m on call 24/7 and my answer… it was not a problem when we carried pagers.

She did not believe me so I invited her to see for herself…

She quickly understood I was in a dead zone and working out back was even worse… she found she had no coverage…

For fun every so often I enter my address to the coverage maps and it always comes back not available… 4 homes up or down the road service available.

It was very challenging at times… I was even fired once for not immediate returning a page…

I was returning a rental lift gate truck for work racing the clock and knew if I was not back in the yard by closing the hospital would be on the hook for another rental day but also my vehicle would be locked in the yard overnight…

It took 30 minutes to return the truck and return to work… where I was fired.

That night I booked a ticket to Europe but not paid… 10:30 the next morning the CEO called and asked if I was coming to work and I said you fired me last night…

She ask if I was willing to give up my career just like that and I said you were very clear…

I didn’t go to Europe and returned to the job…

The dire problem… a vendor showed up a day early for a job walk and I could not be immediately reached.

The result was a hospital use only phone being issued to me… it was fine as long as I had coverage but my home being basically a dead zone created a new problem…

In 35 years under various owners I have seen a lot…

I’d have gone to Europe.
In hindsight I would have chosen different… do have a good admin now but lots of off site mgmt involved.

Ya gotta watch those people who love to fire people.

I was fired 3 times from an electrical contractor here in Idaho years ago. I was one of only 2 journeyman electricians he had, and state required ratio of 1 journeyman for every three apprentices at the time. He would get fined for not having a journeyman on site.

So each time he came crawling back to beg me to come work for him again. Each time i got a raise.

He was such a jerk, most every other journeyman knew about him and refused to work with him.

The final straw was after he came threatening to fire me cause i told the guys to take 20 min break and get out of the sun. It was over 100° and we were installing light pole bases on an asphalt parking lot. I was operating the backhoe. He came out screaming at me for letting them take a break. I stood up, threw the keys down, got in my rig and drove home.

I applied to the union the next day and was assigned to a hospital work crew making nearly 2x the pay. Only issue is it was Washington state, so commute was alot longer.

Turned out it was best move i ever made. The ******* called to apologize a few days later, i told him to go stuff it.
