Are you burning Beech there? I have beech but nothing dead. Have never burned it. How is it for firewood?

Yes, that first pic is beech. I guess it burns as well as any other hardwood. If memory serves me correctly I think it smells better (the smoke) than other hardwood that I normally burn. Usually my firewood consists of a mix of:

Ash
Maple
Beech
American hophornbeam
A little poplar (burns quick)
Yellow birch

Wow, whenever I cut firewood, it is usually in the spring for the next year. It dries out really good during our hot summers! I give it away, but haven't had any of the widows i give it to complain that it isn't dry enough!

I burn coal, as well, so I don't go through it as quickly. That may change this winter as I am retiring in December, so my main job will be caretaker of the stove. Extended (12-14hr) burns won't be required, and firewood is free while coal is not.
That said, I like to stay ahead on my supplies. You never know what life is gonna bring, so 2-3 years of firewood on hand is a good hedge.

Got some time today to clear limbs to torch on a row of brush near property line hauled brush with my semi homade mini hay wagon and my Honda pioneer 500. I'll be planting fall Xmas trees and running drip irrigation there.

Beech makes great firewood. BTU content is higher than Red Oak, significantly higher than Red Maple, almost as high as Sugar Maple.

It also has a relatively low moisture content when green (almost as good as Ash). And it dries relatively quickly.

Thanks. My Dad built that in 1968. He would be astounded to know that I'm still using it on and off road in 2025. The spindles and wheels are from a 1959 Morris Minor.

I have made a few improvements over the years - lengthened the tongue and added fenders and the tailgate/ramp. It is great for hauling appliances.

I put new wood on the sides a few years ago, but decided to leave the rusty metal, sort of a "rat rod" trailer.
