You Know You Are Old When

I'm definitely Not as old as some but I've seen a consumer owned gas
two stroke (I think) clothes washing machine in operation when I was a kid. All I remember thinking to myself is man that could power a cool go kart. Lol.
Did it had a "pedal starter" with a sector gear engaging the engine? The one at my place did. But I was too small to get it running before it "went away".

We had a Briggs and Stratton kick start motor on a homemade go cart as kids similar to this one. I put a straight pipe on exhaust. 3/4" pipe thread I believe. A long pipe sounded like it was running underwater, short pipe wasn't good either. It was 4 cycle. I'm guessing it was about 2.5 to 3hp.

You may be old if you remember when they sold watermelons in horse troughs full of ice water at the supermarket.

Weird! GE had a working toaster by 1909... you'd think someone would want an outlet for that, alone! :ROFLMAO:

The venerable KitchenAid mixer that everyone's mother owned was on the market by 1919, and the first electric clothes iron beat that by almost 40 years (1882), although they weren't really popular or commonly found until the 1920's.

The older part of my house (1770's addition) was originally wired in two large circuits that covered the whole house. Most of our lighting and living room outlets still run on one of those ancient 15A circuits, which forever frustrates my wife, given most modern clothes irons draw nearly 12A on their own.
1920’s was a building boom in my city…

30 amp main with two circuits. 15 amp light circuit and 20 amp outlet for a typical 3 bedroom home.

The most unusual was a legal WWII conversion from large single family into 3 unit triplex.

One 30 amp main and 3 individual 15 amp sub panels…

Problem arose when a tenant replaced his 15 amp fuse with a 20 causing the 30 amp main to blow.
All of the above have city natural gas for the heavy lifting…

I looked this up, wondering if this might be how that mellon got its name. No answer on that, but Google did tell me it's illegal to sell any food for human consumption out of horse troughs.

If someone bothered to write such a law in the books, it means someone was doing it! :D

Regional thing maybe? Never heard of that. Or maybe I'm not old.
It was common in Missouri stores in the 60's and 70's. Kind of like bobbing for apples, but with watermelons....
