I like to repurpose elastic bungee hooks. I usually buy the one's with wire hooks but had this one around with the heavy molded plastic hook covering where the elastic fastens. It was worn out so I took a saw to it to see what was what. Not worthy of much.

With the wire hook type, if I get a weak spot, I cut the elastic and secure it with a wire staple just like new. I use the poly/wire for electric fencing. I save the old wire hooks and as demonstrated in my photo, loop the wire rope through instead of gate handles for temporary fencing, etc.

I keep a supply of those hooks around:

Like you, I cut out the weak spot in the damaged bungee and put a hook on either end to make two shorter bungees. I hook them together if I want the same original length.

Bungees used to be cheap as dirt, but like everything else, the prices are going up. Makes perfect sense to repurpose or repair them.

When I actually ran a lot, I used to find bungee cords and S-hooks on the road constantly. Unfortunately, many of the bungee cords were either broken, or missing a hook.

So I would pick them all up, throw away the broken bungees and keep the hooks for the ones that were missing. I sill have a big enough collection that I may never need to buy any more....

While driving one day, I started seeing rubber bungee's on the road. I came up behind a flatbed that had several still hanging on his DOT bumper where had staged them at his last drop.

He was not too happy with himself when I told him over the CB.
