I had one for a while (I collect AMC cars ). At the time the designers were after a smaller car with same interior room as a large sedan with lots of glass, no blind spots.
The running gear was fine so I saved the 258 six & Torqueflite trans.
Esthetically it was a design flop, but there have been other ugly ones before and since.
There even was a Pacer X available with the 304 V8 which meant a 390 or 401 would easily swap in.
AMC should have had this model:
I always thought the wagon version looked better than the hatchback.

64 Pontiac Catalina wagon 389 V8 posi track rear.
Took my test in 67 in a snow storm with a great big boat of a Catalina. Actually had to back up a bit and goose it to get thru a snow plow wipe.

I had an AMC Eagle.
Great unique vehicle.
The 258 was a solid performer but the emissions systems were a huge F--- up.
Spaghetti system of vacuum hoses and electronics from Gm, a Chrysler carb all sitting on an AMC engine and none of them were on speaking terms.

Amazing Driver Ed facilities…

I went to school in the 70’s and text books said we buy sugar from Cuba.

Still 1950’s text books.

The simulator at another district were all 3 on the tree with clutch pedals… I was familiar from working at the Dealership… not one other student was and one girl cried saying driving the simulator was so hard… she kept failing to step on the clutch when she came to a stop…

That's what I drove for my first license in the USA, which I had to have to get insurance.

The official conducting the test was less than pleased as he fought to get into the passenger seat of my sprung-over CJ3A. But what nearly made me flunk was when asked to turn around on a crowded and relatively narrow street.

As it turned out, there was an empty parking spot on the opposite side, and combined with me knowing exactly what my Jeep could and couldn't do (after having driven it for a few years by then) I eliminated the 3-point turn and made it a simple U-turn.

Yes, I was within two inches or so of the parked car to the right when starting, then cleared one car and the curb on the opposite side by about as much, but so what? I did turn around as I was asked.

He eventually calmed down and passed me, after I pointed out that he told me to turn around, not to make a 3-point turn.
Yep! He told me I didn’t even have to parallel park, but I did.
Ours is a M38 military model. Still all original and keeping up at the ranch.

The "three-speed" in our simulators felt like a broomstick in a bucket of oatmeal - and also. a dead ringer for the three-speed in a Chevy Citation. :)

Got in a head on accident with our drivers ed car.
Not our fault, car came directly in our lane. Fortunately no serious injuries at about 30 MPH although the instructor took out the windshield and we had to pry the front bucket seats apart to get a back seat student's head out from being jammed between the bucket seats. 1970 VW beetle.

Early 70's, it was to somewhat hard to get a job driving semi as the Teamster's had most everything locked up. You might get on only to get let go just short of 30 days so I took a driving course to see if it would help.

The school had 2 or 3 cab over tractor's, one of which was a Mack with the Maxidyne set up. (high torque rise engine, 5sp) You had to let the rpm's drop and clutch to shift. One student took out the tranny as soon as he took off.

Then we were down to two trucks so the instructor rode shotgun and three of us crunched up in the sleeper berth. (Not legal today unless it's a bench seat with belts).

Fast forward to 2003 when I went back to driving and took the CDL course to make it easy. We had a student who quit because they could not get the shifting down having never driven a stick. (10 spd RR).
